I've been away this weekend and there's probably many things that I'd like to post about, but one of the things is that Omar Khadr, the former child soldier imprisoned and tortured by the US and its Canadian lapdogs, is out on bail. I'd like to make a lengthy post but now I don't need to, because [livejournal.com profile] commodorified made an excellent post and you can read it here, and that pretty much says everything I would on the subject. Go read it. It's an important post.

My LJ has been rather repetitive lately, all B5 and spinal tumours, so I thought I'd share some interesting, inspiring, and horrifying articles and posts that have caught my eye but that I've been too preoccupied to blog about.

Most of you have probably already read The White Saviour Industrial Complex, one of the many excellent critiques out there of Kony 2012.

In addition to the library workers out on strike (and inside city workers likely joining them soon), Air Canada workers staged a wildcat strike. For obvious reasons I can't join the solidarity actions, but if you can, you should. Also, this is one industry that I feel even the most right-wing, anti-union bigot ought to agree needs to be paid well. I mean, do you want the guy who helps land your plan to be overworked and underpaid?

The largest political protest in Canadian history happened yesterday, with 200,000 students, teachers, parents, union activists, and others striking against proposed tuition hikes. (That article's in French; the English-language press has been stupid about the whole thing. Here's an English article from the CBC, but it downplays the numbers and significance.

Via [livejournal.com profile] symbioid, a heartbreaking article about the murder of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

Via [livejournal.com profile] hano, Robert Bales is not the victim. (Robert Bales being the murderous scum who slaughtered 16 Afghan civilians, including children.)

Via [livejournal.com profile] marlowe1: Hey, frum parents! Get your daughter a facelift or she'll never find a husband. I posted some pretty shocking links above but there's something about this one that is just a special kind of wrong.

Watch Bruce Schneier trounce the former head of the TSA in a debate about security.

signal-boosting a petition against forcing American ISPs to police downloads )

ETA: Because the above is pretty grim, watch this video about a blind stray dog living in a trash dump until she's rescued by nice people. It will make you cry but it has a happy ending, I promise.

We (Canada, that is), got our asses handed to us in Afghanistan by a bunch of dudes who live in caves. Greater militaries than ours have failed to successfully occupy and subdue Afghanistan, so it's not that surprising that even with our technological might, we would flee with our tails between our legs.

"The combat mission in Afghanistan has come to an end." While I have no love for the Taliban, this is a good thing. It's a senseless waste of Canadian, and more importantly, of Afghan lives*, regardless of how you dress up our invasion, assault, torture, and mass murder in that country with the liberal vocabulary of humanitarianism and "women's rights." (My fellow feminists will note that women's rights in Afghanistan went under the bus the second it became clear we were losing, and that any lasting stability in the country could only be accomplished by negotiating with the Taliban and other fundamentalist whackjobs. Also, there were Afghan feminist movements but we didn't like 'em because they were communist.)

Anyway, you'd think this would be a big deal, the withdrawal of Canadian troops from Afghanistan. But we've been at war for almost 10 years and practically no one here gives a shit (our troops handed over innocent people for torture, the government covered it up, everyone found out, and said government got in with a majority in the next election), so I guess it makes sense that it's not front-page news. And the massacre in Norway does deserve its cover space, of course. But you'd think the withdrawal wouldn't be totally buried, right?

What gets me is that nowhere will you see a mainstream newspaper state that we lost. We are leaving because we lost. Our inglorious defeat is framed entirely framed in articles about heroes returning home and how the Canadian military is now firmly embedded in the hearts and minds of Canadian civilians. We blundered into a war that, for various reasons including that it was a war declared against an abstract concept, we couldn't possible win, stupidly following the U.S., we committed terrible atrocities, wasted huge sums of money and many, many lives, and then lost the war, That's bad enough, but to make matters worse, no one will admit that the whole thing was a colossal fuck-up. Fifty years from now, schoolchildren will read a pretty story about the War on Afghanistan that bears absolutely no resemblance to anything that actually happened, because no one can admit what happened now.

Reading the Canadian news today is like reading dispatches from Muhammed Saeed al-Sahaf, except significantly less entertaining.

We lost because we had to lose, because you can't win the hearts and minds of a people by invading and occupying their country or by torturing and murdering them. We lost because we are led by stupid white men who know zilch about a country like Afghanistan. We lost because you can't eliminate terror any more than you can eliminate addiction or sadness or shoddy journalism. Losing was always inevitable; lying about said defeat is not.

* Yes, I believe the lives of Afghan civilians are more important than the lives of Canadian soldiers. Denounce me as a traitor all you like. Some of the people murdered with my tax dollars were children.

Only five out of seven jurors in Omar Khadr's "trial" need to find him guilty in order for him to be convicted. All agree that it's totally cool to try a 15-year-old for war crimes with a military commission. The evidence of sick pedophile fuck Sgt. Joshua Claus, who threatened to gangrape a child to death, will be admitted.

Disgusting.

The detention of the Juarez chief of police was the big story in Mexico City over the past few days, with this awesomecakes shot gracing the cover of La Jornada:

I was wondering if it was going to show up outside the Mexican news, but apparently it was on FOX, go figure.

I heard vague things about 1600 people killed in flooding in Northern Pakistan, but I wasn't really aware of the severity until I got home. [livejournal.com profile] ironed_orchid has a links round-up here.

Stephen Hawking sez: We're so screwed.

Are the courts playing stupid for political reasons, or do they honestly think that property destruction during mass demos is organized?

Jury selection for Omar Khadr's trial. I know the trial has started, but it's painful to read about it.

The intertubes informs me that Ted Stevens died. Okay, so he was corrupt as all hell, but to his credit, he coined one of the best memes ever, and his trucks will live on in the popular lexicon.

I'm in a fantastic mood today, but the news seems to make me want not to be.

I am pretty sure that if I murdered someone, regardless of my good intentions, even if it were a "mercy killing," the Toronto Star would not run a long article describing my virtues in minute detail.* That's a fucking disgusting excuse for journalism.

"Officer Bubbles" arrests a girl for blowing bubbles at the G20 protests. Today, there was a bubble protest in Toronto. Hope it went well and no one got arrested!

Someone sent me a great article on civic participation, so I'll post that under the cut )

Israel's "illegal" children.
State policy forbids migrant workers from having children in the country. If a woman does, she must send her newborn home. If she keeps her baby in Israel, she loses her work visa.

Quote of the day, via China Miéville:
‘To imply that those currently at the top - the Warren Buffets and Roman Abramoviches of this world - are the very best, the nec plus ultra of humanity, is a kind of hate speech toward the species. Dignity demands that we refute it.’

Virginia governor declares Confederate History Month. What? Really?

The Catholic Church knowingly dumped pedophile priests in remote native villages in Alaska, because, hey, who could stop them?

The Afghan torture hearings continue, but don't think that you get to hear about it.

Speaking of which, remember when we invaded Afghanistan to drive out the Taliban and bring in democracy? LOL.

The Ontario government continues not to do anything about the mercury contamination in Grassy Narrows, the result of the Dryden Pulp & Paper Co. dumping 9,000 kg of mercury into the Wabigoon River.

This is just chilling to listen to. Some radio asshats making jokes about starvation in Haïti.

The same high school that cancelled prom rather than let Constance McMillen bring her girlfriend did something even worse to another kid. 16-year-old Juin Baize was kicked out on his first day of class, and his family was eventually forced to relocate to Florida to protect his safety, just for being transgendered.

Cats at the Toronto Humane Society are in danger of being euthanized if homes are not found for them by April 12.

American troops kill a bunch of insurgents with AK-47s.

And by "insurgents," we mean "Reuters journalists." And by "AK-47s," we mean "cameras." But they're still totally dangerous to the war effort, so much so that the Americans felt the need to lie about it afterwards.

After they were done blasting the hell out of a group of clearly unarmed people, they shoot up a few Good Samaritans trying to evacuate one of the wounded journalists. Oh yeah, and two kids. Then they congratulate themselves on some good shootin'.

You can read about it and watch the video of the murders here.

Between our pathetic environmental record (and the impressive trollage by the Yes Men at Copenhagen) and the Conservatives shutting down the committee probing Canadian links to the torture of Afghan detainees, this has been an exciting couple weeks for news in the Great White North. By which I mean I am thoroughly disgusted by our government in a way that is almost refreshing. I mean, I knew they were evil from the get-go, but Harper was at one point able to disguise his oozing corruption and malice from a large enough group of voters to get into power. It's kind of amazing that I can still be shocked by anything these bastards do.

I'd like to think that his latest demonstrations are enough that he will be relegated to the status of national embarrassment, a collective cringe akin to that which history now gives Mulroney, but I think Canadians are by and large dumb and hateful enough that none of this will affect the outcome of the next election. Also, Iggy would probably do the same.

- U.S. health care: So no public option? The health care debacle in the U.S. has gotten so twisted and entangled that I'm not sure what's going on. All I know is that they'll cover prayer but not gynecological check-ups or basically anything that's part of that "special interest group" composing over half of the American population.

+ Nice op-ed by Zizek on anti-communism in the former Eastern Bloc. You can pair it with this article if you'd like.

+ I finished reading A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini and it made me cry. Yes, I know you all read it two years ago.

- I am quite sick of seeing all of those re-usable shopping bags that are either black and say "this bag is green" (har har) or say "this bag is not plastic." You've had to pay for plastic bags in Toronto for quite some time now, so even people who litter and voted Conservative because of their position on the Alberta tar sands and club baby seals in their spare time carry them now. So carrying one that toots your environmentalist horn just makes you look like a smug yuppie. So there.

+ Good 9-11 conspiracy article, through which I found a link to all of the people who would have had to have been involved for the Truther conspiracy to make sense.

+ I am a crusty old lady (see above) but I wore Docs to school today and the kids were like, "nice kicks, Miss!" And then I had to ask if they meant my boots.

P.S. +++ The season finale of Mad Men. I love this show so much. Perhaps there shall be a separate post about how much I love this show.
