His job is literally to play the game. My friend's partner wrote a really compelling paper on the proletarianization and racialization of professional sport, especially American football. It was before the whole Kaepernick thing but I wish very much he'd update it and post it somewhere I could link to. Basically I think despite his fame and money, Kaepernick's choices are/were limited, and I don't blame him for making the best choices he can with in a shitty framework.
