I'm fairly certain either a man wrote it or a woman with a lot of internalized sexist attitudes wrote it. "Bread and Roses," "Rebel Girl," and "Union Maid" were all written by men (very long-dead men, at that) and they all seem more in tune with contemporary notions of feminism.
