Why on an app rather than a website? Is it a monetizing thing? I don't listen to many podcasts at all and when it do, it's only on my laptop, at a site.

If I may? Liking or subscribing et al helps the AI. Engagement. Stuff like that.

I'm like you, except I prefer to download the audio and listen to it elsewhere.

I listen to W&S on my laptop like you.

(I doubt they are anywhere near monetisation and do it for the love of the game)

What greylock says; it has to do with discoverability on the app. The more people engage/download/star/etc., the more it recommends it to other people.

When you access direct from a website (same with buying books), you see it and the creator sees it, but no stranger on the internet sees that you've listened or bought or read it. Whereas when you access it through a platform, the All-Seeing Algorithm sees it and is like, "hey, people are interested in this, I will push it to other people."

Which, I will note, absolutely sucks but that's how it be.

Ahaha the dance of pre-orders is a lot. I just got hit with a massive customs fee for something I ordered (presumably a book) from the US that is about equivalent to the price of the book.
