In the old days, before the invention of this series of tubes that we call teh intarwebs, communication was far more difficult. For example, I would have said unto you: "Verily, today mine eyes beheld the most wondrous kitten." (And by you, I mean those of you within shouting distance.)

And would you have replied, "O [livejournal.com profile] sabotabby, tell me of this fair beastie!"

And then I would have wasted an enormous amount of time describing unto you the kitten's diminutive stature, the magnitude of her yellow eyes, her most delectable pink nose, and her paws upon which were bestowed a most unusual number of toes. By the end of this description I would have still failed to convey the astonishing cuteness of the kitten.

Speaking of cute kittehs in days of yore, I just saw saw Shrek II for the first time and nearly burst a gasket when Puss in Boots exclaimed, "CAPITALIST PIG DOGS!"

There is also a snippet of a Tom Waits song in it as well as a Nick Cave number.

One thing troubles me, though: Why did Eddie Murphy's donkey character have to turn into a white stallion?

That might be a valid analysis. I'll have to ponder it. Subtext is everything.

Also in the film, there are light swipes are Starbucks and arguably pro-union sentiments expressed, although to two are unrelated:

SHREK: [bluffing his way into the Fairy Godmother's potion factory] We're from the union. Have you guys been feeling sort of down trodden or oppressed lately?

KEEBLER ELF-LIKE WORKER: [sotto voce] Are you kidding? We don't even get dental.
