Man, I don't watch The Simpsons or American Idol either (or Friends or Sex in the City or Seinfeld or....I've never even ever seen The Wire, either. //facepalm) This usually leaves me at about a 75% disadvantage when I work an office job and people want to, you know, talk to you. About non-work crap. Also I am Old, so if the hot topic (ha) is a band that really peaked after 00 or 01 I am probably clueless about it.
I had an anaphylactic reaction to Derrida in grad school (I was an English major -- ding! and dropped out -- dingding!) so unfortunately I cannot even try to fake it about Lacan et al, which I understand loses me major culture vulture points. HOWEVER I am slightly familiar with Walter Benjamin and Paul de Man and John Berger (I have his short stories) (I'll read that book any decade now), so that gets me some checkmarks in the Old Skool culture vulture column, I think.
