Samantha’s entire character development revolved around the status of her relationship to Jay, which was that they were exes, which I guess made it hard for her to see him with Michelle Rodriguez and there you go: character. Why was she even in the movie.

I got that impression but where did they actually say this? At one point I thought she might have been Jay's brother's girlfriend. Anyway, both of the girls were defined by their relationship to Jay. And the wife of the cop was defined in relation to him and the fetus. The only independent female character was the reporter, and she was an idiot.
