Your daily dose of outrage

Via BoingBoing, every violent act in the Superbowl ads:

Most of that just comes off as slapstick, to be honest. None of it's as violent as the following ad, which also apparently aired during the Superbowl (via [livejournal.com profile] fengi):

I know, rationally, that most men I encounter don't think that way about women. I mean, they can't, right? You can't hide that kind of hatred.

Can you?

I saved the worse for last. This story comes to us via [livejournal.com profile] audrawilliams.

U.S. soldier waterboards his 4-year-old daughter for not learning her ABCs.

You know, I think I'm just going to curl up under a pile of blankets with my cats for awhile. Wake me up when the world doesn't suck so much.

I think if there had been even the slightest *wink wink* tone to the second one, it wouldn't have been shocking. But it just comes across as so hostile.

The other thing that chills me about that ad is how well-done it is. Excellent voice-work, spot-on writing (not in terms of "I'm down with the sentiment", but it effectively and concisely conveys its gross, gross message), interesting-looking actors directed in an appropriately subdued manner... when this shit's being inarticulately spewed by some barely-verbal Gomer on youtube I sort of feel a relief of "Oh, good, it's pretty clear this guy's a whack-job". But THIS. In another context, one where the creator's intent was not "am-i-right guys? huh? aren't we noble heroes? let's buy this!", but a specific piece of character work meant to convey how broken that character was, I'd be damn proud to have written that speech.

THIS shit, this slick glossy shit is the dangerous shit. This is the shit with legs that run for miles.

eugh.
