This is why punching Nazis. This is why no-platforming Nazis. This is why we don't treat fascism as simply another point of view to compete in the marketplace of ideas. This is why we shouldn't tolerate intolerance, be it those who burn black churches in Louisiana, those who murder Muslims in mosques, those who plow cars through crowds with a particular aim towards women, or those who shoot up synagogues.

I know I'm far more likely to die in a school shooting than in a synagogue shooting but it nevertheless goes to the bone, you know?

I'd rather die from a school shooting. I'd rather die from a nameless act of rage than give anyone satisfaction in my passing.

But I'm not scared of them killing me individually in an act of spontaneous violence, it's statistically unlikely. I'm scared of them gaining power. I'm scared that the shootings are encouraging those who I most want discouraged.

I'm not really either, but I'm scared that toddlers in concentration camps is no longer unpalatable to the voting public.

I can't even tell if I'm surprised to know this about - Canadians? Humanity?

I'm scared that - if we vote badly in October - we may be subject to a regime that will joyously demand that we learn to want and beg for such crimes against humanity as those camps.

And "First past the post" makes it so damned easy to vote badly. It always has.

And yet my only faint hope is that FPTP will mean that Andrew "racism-lite" Scheer and Maxime "it's not a dog-whistle if humans can hear it" Bernier will split the vote.

While moving the Overton window, but then, we can't have everything.

I don't know if I'd say that school shooting are nameless acts of rage that wouldn't give anyone satisfaction, I feel like both things stem from the same mindset of allowing men to act like entitled little boys with access to guns.

It's terrifying how this shit is spreading and keeps happening. I feel like there would be ways to counter it if people wanted to make a concerted effort, starting with making these views unacceptable in society. But of course that's an unpopular view itself because oh no what are people going to do if they can't delude themselves into thinking Nazis are actually good people at heart?!?!

I think - Maybe I'm wrong - that the only person who gets satisfaction from a school shooting is the shooter. But an attack on a shul pleases every anti-Semetic person.

They could. They developed tools to stop the spread is ISIL's ideas. But they refuse to use them on the alt-right.

I don't know specifically what this is in relation to but I wholeheartedly agree with this post. I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. I can see why it would go to the bone even if you're not likely to die in a synagogue shooting.

The latest synagogue shooting, in California. Because now there are phrases like "the latest synagogue shooting" or "the latest mosque shooting" in addition to "the latest school shooting."
