question: do you allow ordinary users on the free_palestine community to freeze comments or responses on their posts to the community? I ask because it was done to me on a recent post, and I know I dont allow it on my communities because i consider it a form of censorship and hence should only be wielded by moderators, but then again most people dont even know that they can do it on community posts.

unfortunately no. I just made it a rule on my communities that nobody is allowed to do that other than moderators and take some action if they fail to comply, usually starting with a post deletion. but its built in that posters can do all the same things to their community posts that they can to their personal journal posts for some reason. it used to be that moderators had all those same priveledges but apparently they decided to take away some of those like the ability to edit text on a post. apparently they decided there was too much potential for abuse.

anyway this is the post in question http://community.livejournal.com/free_palestine/477410.html

you'll see the threads where replies are frozen and new comments are screened. like i said, your community, your call. I see it as a usurpation of moderator authority on mine though. I think the hijacking of the moderator role of censorship and screening by ordinary members, who should all be on an equal playing field regardless of who originally made the post, is counterproductive to open, rational discussion in a community setting. thats my two cents.

well there's other things you can do if they fail to comply, and one thing moderators CAN do to posts is undo what the users did (i.e. unfreeze threads and unscreen responses) in the edit post options. usually a warning from a moderator is sufficient
