WHAT

WHAT

How is this a thing that happened in the world?

Apparently women are more concerned with making babies than making money and therefore it's just fine that gendered pay discrimination exists.

Oh Wisconsin. I know it's hard to compete with Arizona and Texas for Worst State Ever, but do you have to be so blatant about it?

I'm too tired today to give the "Texas has lots of good things about it and in many ways is no worse than most of the rest of the country" speech in its entirety.

[identity profile] mistersmearcase.livejournal.com 2012-04-09 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, I know...I just kind of got insane about this after living in Texas for a long time and then moving to Chicago and being told all the time by people from 100% Caucasian suburbs who had never been there how terrible Texas was--primarily because W was from there. Meanwhile, it was never of note that Ronald Reagan, Donald Rumsfeld, and a bunch of other fun people were from the midwest. I started defensively just thinking the same way about the midwest (Northeasterners actually don't seem to spend much time bashing Texas) and thinking stuff like, well, this Wisconsin thing is really just the rise to prominence of the bland, white, milquetoast middle-American xenophobia. I get the flaws of Texas as well as anyone. I spent seven years there. I just sometimes resent that its iconic conservatism whitewashes the 80% just-as-badness of Missouri, Nebraska, places where they don't have an accent culturally marked as belonging to ignorant people...

[identity profile] mistersmearcase.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I think the story is the family is northeastern but W grew up in Texas. His accent sounds authentic. As to the cowboy thing, as you've probably heard, the expression in Texas is "all hat and no cattle."

When I was working at a Web design company and getting calls from all over, I liked New Yorkers and Texans the best. New Yorkers were direct and didn't waste my time and Texans were very friendly. And Austin was the coolest city in America for a time (taking the title from Seattle who stole it from Minneapolis)

[identity profile] mistersmearcase.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
New Yorkers are direct, for sure, and it's kind of a good way of putting it. People think New Yorkers are rude. They can be, if there's a conflict, but a lot of the time they're just direct. Texans, for that matter, do a lot less bullshitting than people in most parts of the south, it seems to me. And Austin, yeah, is the best. If I weren't in a relationship with someone who wants to live in New York forever, I probably would have moved back to Austin by now. (New York is great but eventually it wears on you.)

(Oh weird, it looks like maybe you live in my neighborhood.)

[identity profile] symbioid.livejournal.com 2012-04-09 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I am sooooooo hoping we get this fucker out. I am so fed up with this dickwad and his cohorts. They are the epitome of the vilest of Republican Right-Wing Jagoffs.

Google "Glenn Grothman" to see the vilest of them all.

The man is a self-hating pile of shit, and in my mind, I like to pretend he's behind 90% of /r/mensrights

[identity profile] symbioid.livejournal.com 2012-04-09 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
It's weird. I honestly never felt that we were so far off the rails. The Tea Party bullshit really had a lot to do with it, I think.

I grew up in rural Wisconsin (Door County), farm country, and while there were plenty of Republicans, it was still a centrist type Republicanism that I could tell, and there were a lot of Democrat farmers.

Madison, of course, is it's own utopia (Like Austin, a refuge for the weirdos). Someone on mefi said Wisconsins isn't purple, it's a patchwork of very deep blue and very deep red. Which explains LaFollette and Feingold coming from the same state as McCarthy and Walker...

I think there's a heavy right-wing population in the Northeast section of the state (Fox Valley) and some Milwaukee burbs. One of our most liberal reps (Gwen Moore) is right next door districtwise to one of the most conservative (James Sensenbrenner).

I really fucking hate having to sound like the cool people who live/are stuck in Texas "Hey, we're not *all* bad..."

I'm really really really bothered by the fact that the people we have running don't have a smashing lead or mandate over Walker. If Feingold entered the race, we might have a shot.

[identity profile] symbioid.livejournal.com 2012-04-09 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I know how you feel... I used to talk shit about Texas until Walker. I looked up Toronto cuz I thought of Ford and then realized that the total state of Wisconsin has about the same number people in the full metro area of Toronto.

Speaking of Milwaukee, there's always this classic clip of Alice Cooper in Wayne's World (Milwaukee is the largest and Madison is the second largest city in the state, I believe).

[identity profile] symbioid.livejournal.com 2012-04-09 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
And to speak of the utter bullshit topic (i.e. the Republican's war against women) did you see Ashley Judd's piece over at the Daily Beast? I haven't read it fully but the bits I've read were right on.

And with my experience w/the "bro" last saturday I'm really hating men lately.

[identity profile] symbioid.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Obviously I don't hate all men. I'm just in a very misanthropic mood lately :P I completely agree with you, blaming a group of anything for the sins of a few is wrong.

To me, feminism is about equality, nothing more nothing less.

Conversely, my mom is a Republican, and as much as I say I hate Republicans I love my mom to death (well, not literally). Everyone should be judged as an individual. Anyways, solidarity in the struggle!

[identity profile] marlowe1.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
Well, they do eat people there (ok I'm letting my Minnesota snob Packers hater self show - yes I find football boring but still...fuck the Packers)

[identity profile] nichtsda.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 12:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought that no one could be worse than Scott Walker

I dunno... I like his Jacques Brel covers more than David Bowie's.

Oh wait, wrong Scott Walker.

[identity profile] radiumhead.livejournal.com 2012-04-09 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
This whole "United States" thing is just a big mistake. We need to just split up into terroritories.

Theres always gonna be places where ignorant fucktards rule, & theyre never gonna wanna change.

And they have the public's support, thats how they get away with it.

[identity profile] marlowe1.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
And they will follow Ron Paul's analogy literally and take their gold to the desert island because they know that on a desert island paper money has no meaning.

Let's see how long it takes them to realize that gold is just as worthless.

[identity profile] marlowe1.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
Oh like morons can be isolated.

[identity profile] radiumhead.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Itd be a start. I know i could live without Florida, Texas or Wisconsin. Just for a start.

[identity profile] hopita.livejournal.com 2012-04-09 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
How is it possible that Scott Walker and Ann Coulter are real live humans in this world, as opposed to characters created as absurd caricatures for a show like 30 Rock?

[identity profile] smhwpf.livejournal.com 2012-04-09 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
WTF?

Good grief. God, I hope that recall succeeds.

At least it should lose him the women's vote. You know, if they're not all too busy having babies to go out and vote. And if they still have the vote in Wisconsin by then.

[identity profile] marlowe1.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
Is that recall still going on? I haven't heard anything about it for years. I thought it failed and that the next chance was the election.

This is the same Governor of Wisconsin who wanted to repeal same-sex hospital visitation rights, right?

This is so absurd I can only think he's being set up deliberately as a lightning rod so that the "conservatives" can carry out other nefarious plans without having attention directed at them.
