New Who!!!
Obligatory squee post.
LOVE Thirteen. She is adorable and perfect and yay. And properly alien. I would like it if she kept the goggles but I guess not. Very relieved that there were not any of the "I'm a woman now" gags that certain previous showrunners would have done.
Plot was your typical first episode of the series, though I did like the tooth-face guy's stupid character design. Like dude. You have teeth glued to your face.
Sold on Ryan as excellent companion material. Glad he was not insta-cured by the power of will or whatever and I like the idea of a disabled character who solves problems with his brain.
Yaz is also decent, though much more typical. Hopefully they will develop her more.
Graham is meh and irks me already on account of Grace being a much more interesting character, and also they had a badass older black woman and killed her off to highlight the old white dude. Do better, show. I'm guessing he's dead by the end of the season and is reunited with her, though.
No one's said it yet so I guess I have to. The new sonic screwdriver looks like a vibe. Are they really gonna go with that?
My totally legal download cut off pre-theme; I looked it up and dig the new arrangement but I'm still trying to actually find the title sequence.
Anyway, I am pretty happy because it was good and for the next few months, for an hour a week, I can indulge in the fantasy of an alien saving this garbage fire of a world from ending.

That sonic screwdriver looks like one of the Gynecological Tools for Operating on Mutant Women in Dead Ringers

I am quietly fuming that we get Graham and not Grace. I suspected she would be killed off on account of how she never featured in the teasers, but I was still disappointed when they actually did it.

Tooth alien takes humans as trophies and keeps them in stasis, between life and death. He's hunting Crane Dude, but the Doctor rescues Crane Dude (or, even better, Grace rescues Crane Dude). Rather than go back to his home planet defeated, Tooth Guy is like, oh well, any human will probably do, especially one that proves to be more of a challenge, and abducts Grace instead.
Cut to the Doctor about to leave. Ryan is watching the video that dead guy left about his sister, drawing a parallel. He's determined not to spend the rest of his life like that guy, never knowing what happened to his grandmother. He insists the Doctor take him with. Graham is like, WTF, I only knew her for three years and I loved her too, I'm not going to let you wander the universe with some strange alien looking for her. Insert a scene somewhere of Yaz getting humiliated at work because no one believes her about aliens in Sheffield, and she's got a stronger motivation to go.
The Doctor is all, whee, companions! You'll love my TARDIS, it's bigger on the inside, etc., does the transporter thing, and instead of getting transported into the TARDIS, they're all in space. Cue theme.
None of the big plot points get changed, we don't need to see Grace again until the series finale if they can't get the actress back, and while the fridging is now literal, it's clear to the audience that it's not permanent.

I may not have been paying attention, but it seemed like Grace's sacrifice wasn't needed if the Doctor had already removed the dna tracker bomb things, so it was an utterly pointless death, which made it even worse.

I'll be Disappoint if they drop this ball. It's not like the Doctor to ignore an obvious horror that can be reversed.
Like that Ryan’s dyspraxia also raises the topic of invisible disabilities, since it’s not obvious except when he’s trying to do physical things of what you might call second-tier complexity, like riding a bike.
Yup. Though, admittedly, I didn't realize that it was as a result of disability, since I can't really ride a bike either.

One Loose End That Bothers Me (and Another That Doesn't)
The one that excites me: Rahul's office had an Upper Canada Village souvenir pennant on the bulletin board. There's another untold story in that.
Re: One Loose End That Bothers Me (and Another That Doesn't)
They'd better rescue her by the end or I'm gonna be pissed.
Re: One Loose End That Bothers Me (and Another That Doesn't)
I hope some of the jumps (and the captured in stasis) will be explained and play out in the rest of the season.

I mean Capaldi is amazing, even in the weaker seasons where it's clear that Moffat has no clue what to do with him and there is Clara-shaped baggage (though she gets better) but you'll love Bill.
The new actor is good so far. It's tough because Capaldi is one of my favourite actors and the best of the new Doctors, and she has to follow him. The only other thing I've seen her in is Broadchurch, and she's completely unrecognizable here, which suggests range. She's charming af in the first episode, though she's obviously still trying to find her feet; I'm not sure any of the new Doctors were particularly great in their first appearance (regeneration, etc.) other than maybe Eccelston, so I'm hesitant to make a definitive declaration one way or another, but I think she'll be good.

In any case, I feel overwhelmed about how much I have to catch up on, which is actually my #1 reason for not doing it. I quit near the end of David Tennant's run so that's a lot of episodes. I just look at the pile of episodes and want to sleep.
ALSO WHO IS BILL I NEED TO KNOW

Bill is the next companion after Clara. She is black, queer, and fucking awesome on every level, and they rarely write her badly. She's a cafeteria worker at a university and becomes the Doctor's student/apprentice person and she is very snarky but in a funny way rather than how snarky companions are usually written. Also she is gorgeous and has A++ fashion sense. Anyway she is perfect. My icon is Twelve punching a Nazi (well, sort of; a Victorian-era fash) even though he is generally not into punching because he dared insult the perfection that is Bill.
Just look at this adorable space-and-time gay.
