Useful PD for once

I attended an awesome workshop at Evergreen Brickworks on Indigenous Foodways. It consisted of a morning of cooking—we made Three Sisters Soup, bannock, cornbread, and wojapi, the last of which I have never had before and have decided is the Best. Thing. Ever, excepting the aforementioned soup, followed by a tour of the grounds and the Medicine Garden, lunch, and then a loooong talk about incorporating Indigenous ways of knowing and reconciliation in the classroom.

Evergreen Brickworks is beautiful. It's really how I imagine the solarpunk utopia after the Revolution. It's a bit of a pain to get to by transit so I never go, but this made me want to go more often, as I'm so impressed with what they're doing there.


If I'd known how easy this soup was to make, I'd be making it all the time.

The Medicine Garden, featuring white sage, sweetgrass, tobacco, cedar, raspberries, and unfortunately some ragweed that someone tracked in attempting to get to the raspberries.

It's so rare that I ever get anything useful out of PD that it's worth noting when I learn so much that I get a headache.

It is a very cool place. FYI, if you walk up the, admittedly steep, hill, at the top is a lookout and one of the best views of the Toronto skyline.

Oooh, good to know. Though today wouldn't be the day for it given how winded the hike back up the ravine left me.

We all split into groups, and the wojapi group was outside for reasons I understood as soon as I stepped outside and smelled it as it was cooking.

If I could choose any smell to smell forever, it would probably be that one.

It was super cool. I mean, I'd rather the second part were more interactive, but it would have been hard to top the first half.

I'm running a class that involves cooking. So of course I need to try out all the recipes before I do them with the kids. Also I need something to eat because I can't walk to a food place and make it back in an hour.

What kind of beans did they use in the soup, or does it matter?
Wojapi looks amazing. I make a lot of bean soups, but need to try that one.

Two different kinds of beans. Most were flat beans but there were some string beans in there.

Very belated reply to this -- yes, the brickworks is amazeballs. It's actually reasonably accessible by foot if you go to Chester subway station and then walk down Pottery road.

Wow, Google Maps is so useless. Not only did they give me the wrong directions from Castle Frank, they didn't even list that as an option.
