I thought you might find this schadenfreude / squee-worthy: Patches for Imperial Stormtrooper "reenactors" from many nations - including Canada and Israel. There are a handful of Rebel patches as well; some Canadian, none Israeli. The Michigan one is cute, as well as the Rebel "Ghostbusters" patch.

Oddly enough, I never got seriously into Star Wars. I mean, I loved the old ones as a kid, but the new ones...ugh. And as I probably mentioned a gazillion times, I went to high school with Anakin Skywalker, making it utterly impossible for me to take him seriously.

This said, the fact that there's a pink and black Imperial cog makes me utterly happy.

New Star Wars- terrible. I thought that the last one was funny though, the best of the 3. Hayden Christiensen= worst actor ever. He's cute though in a non-sexy kinda way.

If Fillion and Staite did, I'd be a bit disturbed. Not because their fictional personas had intruded into their personal lives, but because it would force me to contemplate the actors outside of their roles, which in turn would remind me that Jayne is played by a Republican. So sad!

What, you're surprised? Jayne is not only played by a Republican, he IS a Republican! The only reason his character is not a racist, mysogynist pig (remark, not that Democrats can't do that as well) is because of political correctness.

I wouldn't say necessarily contemporary Republican for either of them. Maybe right-wing populist, given that they do identify as working class. Of course, the whole set-up is a PC version of the American Civil War, so you have political decentralization but not social conservatism, given that it's Joss Whedon and he wants us to root for them.

I don't. Among the many reasons why DS9 was a better show than TNG was that the characters in DS9 were actually human, so to speak. The crew of the Enterprise were the best of the best -- and how many people do you know like that? -- whereas DS9 was full of flawed, ordinary people who fucked up on a regular basis.

And DS9 started collapsing when the doctor turned out to be a GMO-supergenius who'd been faking it as a regular Joe. That wasn't the straw that broke the camel's back, but it was all happening around the same period when you started having demon-fleets of Dominion and whatever the hell they threw in that show towards the last seasons. I stopped watching.

Ah, the second two words make sense to me at least.

един is single/one (similar to один, the number one), Со- is similar to the English/Latin co-, together, though I suspect it's etymologically closer to syn-, which comes from Greek. I'm pretty sure they are all originally from the same Indo-european root.

I was writing an essay on Chinese foreign relations in the Maoist period yesterday and I wrote down USSR vs. USSA at some point. That wasn't in the essay I handed in, but by 1966 that was China's attitude towards the two countries: interchangeable superpowers.

I think that if Khrushchev would have let Mao have his way, we would have had nuclear war. Mao was pretty much the eastern Che, without a domestic Castro to temper him!

From my perspective (living on US Strategic Air Command bases from the 1950's until the early 70's), the danger was always more that the US would start a nuclear war by accident than anything else.
