Dear Dead-Tree Media

Please stop reporting on issues involving technology and teenagers until you can do it properly.

(I wish they'd stop texting all the time too, but this is just silly.)

[Poll #1642709]

ETA: Previous entry deleted owing to the fact that he totally said "sexting" but my eyes glossed over it.

Oh for the love of Bob could the people who report on research (and do research) please stop sleeping through class on the day of the "correlation is not causation" lesson???

"Hypertext" MEANS SOMETHING ELSE.

(Well, okay, so does "sext", but there's less chance of confusion.)

obviously they never learned that OTHER better meaning

TECHNOLOGY IS SCARY ZOMG

Okay. First: kids send text messages rather than making phone calls because 1) it's time-shifted, so they can send them between classes and 2) a lot of cell plans come with unlimited SMS now, and the ones that don't usually have cheaper SMS than talk.

Second: kids who are more outgoing and social and thus spend more time communicating with others than their more introverted peers do are more likely to be involved in activities with other people, a subset of which includes sex, drug deals, and fights. Another subset includes movies, hanging out at Barnes & Noble annoying the baristas in the cafe, and wandering around the mall not buying anything.

ZOMG THE MALL SCOURGE OF TEENAGERS

[identity profile] kadath.livejournal.com 2010-11-10 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, in class. :P Back in Ye Olden Dayes when SMS didn't exist yet, we had to settle for spacing out when we didn't care about the class. Kids today are spoiled!

Sext me baby! But hypertexting is just stalker potential!

I'm sure that's going to be in the next study. After all, we have to be vigilant in making sure we demonize teenagers as much as possible in teh media, especially when it comes to their excessive use of communication and freedom! >:P

lol that article was meant to be glossed over.

in fact, he glossed over it while writing it. why else use both? or either? hyper-cookie?

I am more shocked that 16 and 17 year olds are driving. I find that horrifying! It sounds bloody dangerous.

[identity profile] terry-terrible.livejournal.com 2010-11-10 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
In my home state you can drive at 14 with a special permit if you work on your family's farm and it's for "farm work" (it usually isn't though).

sexting is at least, like, a word. that means that.

hyper-texting is

not.

moral panic at the discoooooo

[identity profile] sugarmommaless.livejournal.com 2010-11-10 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Sexting: worse for kids
Hyper-texting: worse for me

[identity profile] jenlight.livejournal.com 2010-11-10 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
On the one hand hyper-texting is just plain ol' incorrect, on the other sexting is icky and weird. Icky and weird is somehow worse for me.

[identity profile] jenlight.livejournal.com 2010-11-10 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretend I didn't say that.

I wasn't going to read the article because I suck but then I was like oh hey maybe I should read the article.
I thought the two terms you asked about were both being used to mean what sexting means.

I still hate sexting more so my vote remains the same. That word bothers me.

But the article is preciously stupid. Text messaging: the gateway drug.

This just in :

People who walk around outdoors report higher incidences of birdcrap on their shoulders than bed-ridden seniors.
