Flippant Friday: A most serious debate has been settled.

This being, of course, the matter of the papasan chair that, while clearly belonging to Miss L., was appropriated and collectivized for the masses* by Chairman Marinetti.

Apropos of nothing:

• Your eyes don't deceive you -- this is actually the best icon ever. Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] groovitude!
• I had "The Company Store" by Greg MacPherson running through my head all day, despite someone's efforts to earworm me with something else. Anyone ever heard that song? I can't stop humming it. I blame Chez Newfie.
• I found a hidden stash of Mao stuff, including what seemed to be a Mao valentine, on my way back from work today. They had a Little Red Book that was about the size of my pinkie. Squee!
• On a more somber note, my clever plan to ask Ward Churchill out for a beer tomorrow night has been foiled by the long arm of the law. He's back in court and can't leave the country.

And I'm still deathly ill. Ick.

* And when I say "masses," I am referring to the size of his bum.

why is he in court again?

[identity profile] sarars.livejournal.com 2006-02-17 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't heard of the company store, but I'm going to see if I can download it right now. Any song about a company store must be good. I have heard Bo Diddley's song about a company store. It may actually be called 'Company Store."

sorry to hear that you're deathly ill!

Those cats look like they must shed lots of hair.

OMG, I love that song! Every time we go to visit my partner's parents in Scarberia, we walk through a tunnel at the Lawrence East station and she sings the whole song underground, with awesome booming acoustics.

Now it's stuck in my head, thanks.

[identity profile] caprinus.livejournal.com 2006-02-17 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't go out of your way. It's a miserable, underlit, dirty, oft-flooded concrete deathtrap. Rather like an Appalachian coalmine I would imagine.

The back entrance to the Spadina station is my favourite place to sing. Alas, I only know one opera song. "Corpus inimici, conspuo" (= "I spit on my enemy's body").

16 Tonnes is the actual name of the song. I have the sheet music for it, since we sang it in choir. I love that song. I'm Caprinus's partner, BTW, the one that sings it in the tunnel at Lawrence East RT station. It's got more of a jazz beat, and was often sung by our highschool senior jazz choir.... though the original was much much slower, and not nearly as high energy to sing. It was one of the only songs where the tenors got to sing as lead. That, and Bashana Habaha (I know I just butchered the hebrew name for the song, but I don't have the sheet music handy). It was a rare treat for us to actually sing the song, instead of just supporting the soprano's.

Does that mean he will not be speaking tomorrow at UofT? Also, where did you find this hidden stash and why was I not informed about it when I met with you today. Is there anything for me?

[identity profile] threeliesforone.livejournal.com 2006-02-17 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
we love greg macpherson here. in fact, we have the e.p. with that song on it. the e.p.'s called "maintenance" & greg is on the G7 welcoming committee label, so i bet you could order it directly. or, i could just burn it for you, along with any other greg macpherson you don't have because burning 5 songs on a cd seems to be, y'know, a waste. heh.

It's my belief that every scene of Fear and Loathing should be reshot with cats. That would make everyone go, "Oh that movie makes a lot of sense. At first, I doubted humans could be so paranoid and delusional, but seeing the tabby in Panama hat snorting coke--the white gold, some call it--reminded me how ridiculous we must look in the eyes of our feline cousins when we are snorting coke." In short, this is a consummate modern art project that needs to get behind. ;)

I'm sorry to hear you're ill and hopefully it's nothing serious! I get ill everytime I feel a hairball coming up.

[identity profile] jaymoh.livejournal.com 2006-02-17 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
HAHAHAHAHA! My husband and I have looking for a film project...
My Ayida Wedo would have to be cast of course.

I heart that icon and it cheered me up. News is so bad today, I don't wanna get out of bed.

[identity profile] groovitude.livejournal.com 2006-02-17 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't say hairballs come up from me!

;)

You may have a point there. But catnip-addled cats relax and lick themselves and pass out and do the same thing the next day. Coke addled humans eventually have to go back to their day job as corporate raiders....

I love the fuzzy pets! Great pics! I'll have to get some pics of my Roisindubh and post them soon.

She's my Black Rose (although as she got older she's no longer all black, or hardly at all).

[identity profile] lopukhov.livejournal.com 2006-02-18 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Same thing with my mr.handsome :(

[identity profile] jaymoh.livejournal.com 2006-02-17 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen Ward Churchill speak a few times. He doesn't seem to hang out much to chat. Security reasons I suppose.

He spoke at the Anarchist book fair last year, and he seemed a little more comfortable there.

I'll have to look to see what's going on with him.

[identity profile] brownfist.livejournal.com 2006-02-17 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I have chilled and talked to Ward before. He is kind of stiff, and not as friendly as other speakers. Where on Spadina lady? I must see, I must see! Did you buy anything good? $45 for the Little Red Book is outrageous! For something that used to be distributed for free, $45 is quite a value appreciation. Talk about commodity fetishism. Mao and Lin Piao would be rolling in their respective graves. Speaking of graves I really hope you get to see embalmed Lenin. What did they do to embalmed Stalin?

[identity profile] jaymoh.livejournal.com 2006-02-17 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
sounds like a perfectly fine goal to me.
Oh, those kitties are too fer cutes! Do you get to stay at at home snuggly kitties while you are sick?

[identity profile] pretzelsalt.livejournal.com 2006-02-17 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG ICON!!!!

Hat tip - you always find the bestest!

. . .now I will read your entry.

[identity profile] jaymoh.livejournal.com 2006-02-17 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG icon YOU!
That's hilarious.

[identity profile] bike4fish.livejournal.com 2006-02-18 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Funny, I've been searching the local rags and can't find anything about Ward Churchill having any local court stuff, though it could be the university committee that's investigating his academic work.

Scary, I could identify the icon context solely from having read Fear and Loathing... (when it originally came out in the Rolling Stone) and characatures of Uncle Duke in Doonsbury.

[identity profile] lopukhov.livejournal.com 2006-02-18 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Are those cats fat, or are they just fluffy?*

I saw a sign at the craft store a while back that says, "I'm not fat, I'm just fluffy". I think it was around Hallow e'en last year and it's obviously meant for the fluffy ladies who make quilts and stuff for their cats.

[identity profile] brownfist.livejournal.com 2006-02-18 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
Marinetti is a fat cat (Marinetti is also a very good capitalist). I mean if that cat put on anymore weight his mode of transportation would be rolling around. As for the other cat, she isnt fat, just fluffy.

KITTIES!!!!
