You had to be there.

You know what else I don't get? One of the lifeguards at the JCC had her hair dyed bright indigo. It looked fabulous, and I told her as much. But you'd think she must do a lot of swimming, and every time I dye my hair, the chlorine in the pool bleaches it to something ugly. So I wonder if she possibly dyed it today and just hasn't been swimming yet, or whether there is some secret way to not end up with shitty hair after swimming. Does anyone know?

On a more serious note, a 19-year-old Texan was sentenced to 40 years in prison for helping his 16-year-old girlfriend have an abortion. Did everyone else hear about this and just not say anything? WTF?

She just made it very clear to everyone in the pool that they were not allowed to start drowning.

Everybody was so distracted over the Jacko thing that they didn't care about anything else. That's how they get ya.

[identity profile] rohmie.livejournal.com 2005-06-19 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Then I guess I loose el Jay points there.

[identity profile] rohmie.livejournal.com 2005-06-19 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll have you know that I paid zero attention to the trial until I saw that.

Then I'll crosspost my two cents on it:

Everybody else is being a fucking lemming about Jacko, so here's my not-so-humble opinion:

Oh, another MJ molestation case?

Can't the government find something new to distract the masses with to look away while Monkey-boy is doing something fucked-up to our civil liberties and the other nations of the world? I swear, it's like you roll three dice, where one is a celebrity name:

1 = Michael Jackson
2 = Britney Spears
3 = Paris Hilton
4 = Bob Barker
5 = Martha Stewart
6 = Jennifer Lopez

and the second is a scandal:

1 = is pregnant / got somebody pregnant
2 = is accused of child molestation / sexual harrassment
3 = is in a sex video
4 = is in / causes a financial crisis
5 = Roll both the name and scandal dice again. Both name die people had the scandal together
6 = roll second die twice. Apply both results to the person.

Finally, roll a third die to determine what happens when our eyes and minds are elsewhere:

1 = A constitutional amendment protecting our rights gets repealed
2 = A constitutional amendment removing our civil rights gets added
3 = The U.S. declares war on another country
4 = The U.S. "assists" another country with weaponry and training, which in about five years will be pointed to as a new "Terrorist group" threatening the U.S.
5 and 6 = Politicians' paychecks get fatter.

That's what this is really about, yanno.

It's all part of the conspiracy. Elvis, the aliens, and the DMV. They're all plotting to keep me and my sistahs down!

DAMN THE MAN!

SAVE THE EMPIRE!!!

Now roll me 3d6 and tell me the future.

Is "Stella!" the name of a drink?

Also, there is important conference info in your email.

i wish people who don't know fuck about abortion procedures would stop making RU486 out to be some miracle pill. medical abortions aren't nearly as effective as surgical ones, & the recovery period is significantly different as there's much more bleeding with a medical abortion than with a suction D&C procedure. the fact that the abortion occurs while the woman is not under the supervision of a doctor or RN scares the crap outta me too. abortion is relatively simple & routine, but it is a medical procedure that results in blood loss.

oh...& also: a lot of medical abortions [at least in the case of methotrexate & misoprostol procedures, which is what is offered in some facilities as a medical abortion] do result in a D&C. so, even while the pregnancy might have passed, sometimes there is retained tissue.

oh, & i believe that manitoba does pay for abortions in facilities other than the hospital. i think that happened shortly after dr. morgentaler sold his winnipeg clinic to another group. i've read that manitoba doesn't cover it in a few articles now & i swear that information is incorrect: in 2004, the province was ordered to cover abortion by its supreme court. quebec doesn't fully cover abortion in clinics & neither does nova scotia. although, i'm pretty sure since the morgentaler clinic closed in halifax, there's no other facility to have an abortion in other than the hospital. it's only new brunswick & PEI that don't fund abortion procedures in clinics. i love people who do their research.

/rant

& that has totally nothing to do with what you're talking about. yipes. but i do love a chance to run my mouth off about abortion. i'm so multi-faceted.

enh. it's eye magazine. they're not really known for being factual or even really that intelligent.

& i don't understand how those idiots find people like that & then think it's appropriate to tell them what they think, like it actually matters. then again, it just goes to prove what a wonderfully neglectful parent [livejournal.com profile] magdalene74 must be, seeing as she has nothing better to do all day than troll livejournal. because, really, that's what it seems that she does. there's some comic that someone did online somewhere with a woman at a computer screaming "shut up mommy's little angel! mommy's giving those idiots on livejournal what-for!" or something like that. it's fucking great.

[identity profile] frandroid.livejournal.com 2005-06-20 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought Morgentaler closed his clinic in Halifax because abortion was very available from the public healthcare system?

[identity profile] threeliesforone.livejournal.com 2005-06-21 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, you're right: through the hospital in halifax. i believe they agreed to increase the amount of patients that they'd see.

Swimming cap? I had a bottleblond coworker who swore by them.

[identity profile] zingerella.livejournal.com 2005-06-20 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
It's true. But I look at swim caps the way I look at goggles, cycling shorts, and steel-toed boots (no, I don't wear them all at the same time)—irrelevant to fashion.

I mean, if I'm cycling, dollars will get you doughnuts that my face is all red, I'm sweaty, I'm wearing a stupid bike helmet and my hair is a mess underneath it, and I've got grease on my leg, chin (don't ask me how), glasses, and hands. Really, the fact that cycling shorts make my legs look like two Easter hams wrapped in Lycra is simply not that important.

Likewise, when I'm swimming, my eyes are all red with little goggle marks around them, and I'm wearing a swimsuit (not the most flattering attire), and I'm not really likely to meet the love of my life, unless I accidentally bump into them, because I can't see a blessed thing (no glasses), and the fact that my head looks like somebody put a condom on an egg simply doesn't make a huge difference.

(There's a reason that dancing is my preferred form of exercise. It has only a little bit to do with the fact that I don't look like a dork when I dance.)

[identity profile] rackletang.livejournal.com 2005-06-20 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, see, I was with you until you said you don't look like a dork when you dance. I so totally do. But then, I'm pretty sure I look like a dork 99.9% of the time. It's my "look". :)

Man, every time I'm in Toronto, I go to the Future Bakery, and that...evoked it for me.

Also, soon, "every time i'm in Toronto" will be ALL the time! eeee! Exciting!

[identity profile] frandroid.livejournal.com 2005-06-20 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
FB gets old real quick though.

[identity profile] human-loser.livejournal.com 2005-06-20 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, it is old, for me. But my Toronto friends all seem to live around there and want to go there when i blow into town and call them up, and since I don't know Toronto and the only places i know to go are like, FB, and Sneaky Dee's, and...the Pour House? (is that right? Just off the Annex?), I'm a bit limited in my ability to suggest alternatives.

But that'll change come November. I promise to be a good little Torontonian and frequent only the awesome places. 'Course my definition of awesome is probably a bit...dorky.

[identity profile] frandroid.livejournal.com 2005-06-20 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
The Pour House is on Dupont, right off the Annex yes. I should check it out actually.
