In other news, I did birthday festivities this weekend. It involved Ethiopian food and fancy drinks at Shore Leave. Here is a punch bowl that is on fire:



Okay, it's not a lot of fire. But it was still on fire.

The despair about aging lifted a bit in the presence of good friends, a number of whom I hadn't seen in ages. So that was lovely. Also I got incredibly drunk.

Did a bunch of gardening. I now have almost all of my vegetables in. I'm keeping it simple this year: lots of tomatoes, basil, scotch bonnet peppers, and one experimental ghost pepper. Planted marigolds to help the tomatoes along. Going to pick up some pickling cucumbers tomorrow. The kitten frolicking through the periwinkles is Merlin, one of the tinykittens. Both the two remaining tinykittens and their tinycat mom have claimed my backyard as their territory.

And I got boots! They are like this but more black than red, so essentially the same finish as the boots they are replacing, except that a) they are Docs, not Fluevogs, and b) they do not have massive holes in them. So that's good, too.

The best thing of all is that it's a long weekend and I can actually catch up on my sleep and such!

Hurray for feeling better! I know it's hard to feel this way because you have so many brilliant and accomplished friends (which is because you are brilliant and accomplished, btw) but you have done SO MUCH and are doing SO MUCH. That's not even to mention the profundity of your connection with your students and what effect that has on them. And you just got a ridiculously cool article published! So, hurray again for feeling better :) For what it's worth, I was shocked to find out that I'm five years younger than you because I always thought that we were the same age and you just happened to look younger than me. Damn you look good!

I've been looking my age a lot more recently, I find. But yeah, I'm older than I look and that's one of the reasons why I'm very insistent that I'm running out of time.

And also, if I missed saying it over at the other place, many happy returns. I won't lie and say that aging doesn't suck, because the deterioration of the corpus surely does, but the wisdom that comes of experience is actually kind of cool.

It's only a rough balance and, like a generation starship it always ends in death, but on the whole, not such a bad deal.

I hope the tinykittens don't turn into monstercats who destroy your gardens in search of worms.

Thanks. I'm still waiting for wisdom, alas. But I like your generation starship metaphor.

I'm hoping the tinykittens find squirrels the best thing to chase, thus defending my apple tree.

Yer wisdoms pretty fetchin', my friend. I don't think of just any blogger as one of the most insightful (not to say inciteful) political minds in the country.

I like my generation ship metaphor too; I hope I can use it again one of these days.

P.S. Just click on the boot photo. I cam close to buying a pair of Docs just before I went to Cuba last fall, and am still kind of regretting that I didn't. I remember my last pair quite fondly.

When I was a little kid, the person at the shoe store told my mum that if I didn't start wearing narrower shoes (I refused to wear anything but sneakers), my feet would never fit into women's shoes. I guess he was right, because Docs remain the only shoes I can reliably wear. Oh well.

I know that it isn't/shouldn't be any of my business (as a male) what shoes women wear, but on the other hand, I'm partial to the argument that, like Chinese foot-binding, there is something crippling about "women's" shoes that allows me to argue against them on something other than aesthetic grounds. ('Cause I have to admit: docs and workboots are, er, hot in Young Geoffrey's eyes.)

On the third hand, I suspect that person at the shoe store knew sweet fuck-all about human anatomy. Your big feet are mostly likely a result of your plow-pulling, peasant heritage. :)

I feel the same way, as a woman. Then again, I have friends who swear they can only wear heels and this is the most comfy for them.

I definitely have peasant feet. They're broad and flat. But you'd think they'd be sturdier, somehow.

Have you not had the consequence of aging where drinking makes the next day MUCH harder than it used to or do you just not mind feeling like steaming death?

I felt like shit the next day. It's just that I always feel like shit so I make myself do the things even though my body wants to die.
