What greylock says; it has to do with discoverability on the app. The more people engage/download/star/etc., the more it recommends it to other people.
When you access direct from a website (same with buying books), you see it and the creator sees it, but no stranger on the internet sees that you've listened or bought or read it. Whereas when you access it through a platform, the All-Seeing Algorithm sees it and is like, "hey, people are interested in this, I will push it to other people."
Which, I will note, absolutely sucks but that's how it be.
