Date: 2010-11-10 12:16 am (UTC)Okay. First: kids send text messages rather than making phone calls because 1) it's time-shifted, so they can send them between classes and 2) a lot of cell plans come with unlimited SMS now, and the ones that don't usually have cheaper SMS than talk.
Second: kids who are more outgoing and social and thus spend more time communicating with others than their more introverted peers do are more likely to be involved in activities with other people, a subset of which includes sex, drug deals, and fights. Another subset includes movies, hanging out at Barnes & Noble annoying the baristas in the cafe, and wandering around the mall not buying anything.
