I did manage to lose my wallet after Ny's thing, at/near Moruichi in Arlington, because I am Good Like That. I likely tried to put it back in my purse and it fell out.

Found out after the place closed, when I stopped for gas, so I couldn't even call them to see if they found it. (Will tomorrow, just in case.)

On the bright side, I'm going to be near my main bank tomorrow anyway, due to visiting my parents, so I can just get a new ATM card then. And I had to get a new driver's license anyway due to address change and not getting around to it yet, so, again, not a big thing.

Just, as usual, I liked that wallet, and I annoy myself. Harumph.

Meanwhile back at the ranch

Rainy, blustery and cold today, here in the Milwaukee suburbs, but it could be worse. Here's pic from my sister-in-law up in Willard, taken off their back porch.

I'm so glad I drove back last night.

Went to a memorial Thing, for [personal profile] minoanmiss. (Speaking of, apparently her parents are getting told soon, so we're cleared to go posting in the clear.) Meant to get there early enough to help with cooking for the Watertown Free Fridge, but I didn't, or rather, I got there late because I hadn't had coffee and got some, and then discovered I had forgotten my seltzer I'd gotten as an event thing, so I waffled and came down on the "bringing something is important in a symbolic way" and stopped at Trader Joe's to get lemonade.

I did get there theoretically in time to cook (which we were doing as a memorial thing because Ny did buttloads of cooking for the Fridge), but I kept getting happily lodged in conversations and/or hugs instead, so, well, it was what it was, and it was good.

(I will donate to and/or volunteer at my local Food Pantry in her honor, methinks.)

Stickers, fans, poetry, food, pictures, recipes, music, people, laughter, sadness, occasional sudden memories popping up for people. Because of someone else's story, Eggplant Caponara will now be associated with Ny for me. And when I was outside taking a people break, [personal profile] katarik sang what turned out to be an Episcopal mourning hymn but which to me (before I asked) was someone with a very nice voice singing something that works very well for her voice, which was steeped in sadness yet joy and beauty. It spoke to and of the afternoon.

I took enough fans that I can use some of them as Kid Prizes at work. (And buy some more later. The stickers aren't quite my thing; Ny gave them to small people she met in the subway and doctor's offices and so on, but I think I'll leave that as a thing to smile about about Ny, not as a Thing To Adopt.)

Saw someone from High School I literally have not seen in what, 30 years? (I mean, we read each other's journals, but it's different.) Honestly, haven't seen most of these folks in at least 15 years, because school eats my brain and then my work schedule is peculiar and family stuff is what it is, but the point is: was good. Even though I felt like I was hyper and a little off balance.

(Thanks to the Cambridge Commons co-housing folks for hosting. And thanks to the snowdrops there, too. First of the season for me!)

The Virtual Memorial, I have just learned, will be on April 12 at 1 pm Eastern, via Zoom. I assume the link will be shared on the Google announce list. (If you're not on there yet, just follow the link and explain how you know Ny to the nice friendly info-boxes.)

Also, more info on Things Ny Related, including vague but pertinent info on who her organs went to, here.

Building Neurodivergent Community

I have been learning more stuff this last year and change about how I have been managing my Discord group - and apparently I DO have social instincts! They just are for operation in neurodivergent-majority environments. So it’s time to put this stuff into words, so that I can start explicitly encouraging people’s community-oriented behaviors of: appreciation for differences; tolerance for mistakes without lacking accountability; negotiation for better treatment between individuals of differing flavors; repair of relationships when things go wrong; gentle separations without acrimonious community-breaking when repair is not possible.

And I learned this just in time for everyone to start fleeing Discord! But I’m going to take the lessons I have developed this knowledge into toward wherever we end up, and ask other people about their good ideas. So:

The wall-to-wall crowd of the memorial from which I have just returned testifies to the love poured out and returned by the guest of honor, but I would still rather have been in the worldline where they were present to be celebrated in more than memory.

My right shoulder and neck started hurting Friday night, along with an ache on my right side. I tried Tylenol, which did nothing, but this morning it occurred to me that while I know naproxen doesn't help the weird neck/shoulder tension, it might help my back. I tried, and yes it helped.

Other than that, I went for a walk in the snow yesterday, after staying in all day Friday, and in the evening rysmiel, Sasha, and I watched the first half of the National Theater at Home production of _The Importance of Being Earnest_. It's very good, and we are going to watch the rest of it tonight.

Dream Report

Had several dreams, including one in which [personal profile] sovay  and I were watching an old movie titled, iirc, Coral Island, though it had nothing to do with the Edwardian boys’-adventure novel of the same name. I’m pretty sure Robert Newton was in it, though his character disappeared from the plot midway through.

[personal profile] sovay  then learnt of some recently-discovered footage in which the camera had been kept running between takes, and the chatter of the actors was audible. In the manner of dreams, the footage was immersive, and we could walk into it. Apparently we were visible to them, though they took us for extras and mostly ignored us, except for somebody from Wardrobe who ran up and handed me some more-appropriate stockings and shoes.

Somehow this then segued into a different dream in which I was editing/writing speeches for the Democrats. I kept telling anybody who’d listen that I was Canadian and I wasn’t sure if I could legally work for them, but nobody paid any attention. Also the speech I was writing eventually turned into a script about the protagonist seeking advice from a magical cat.

Welp, I've come down with my first (hopefully only, but time will tell) cold of 2026. Last Wednesday I came home feeling unusually tired and a bit off, and Thursday woke up with a sore throat and congestion. Ditto for Friday, and I stayed home from work both days but did read and respond to emails. The cold has progressed from there and today it's entering the chest congestion/coughing phase. Hopefully that phase will also pass quickly and not linger for weeks. At least I've tested negative for COVID, so it's not that.

The timing of this illness sucks because I had Plans this weekend, namely attending 2 memorial events for old friends who died recently and the annual Old House and Barn Expo in Manchester, NH. I've heard it's a cool event, and also a guy I used to work for is the event's bookseller, and I was hoping to catch up with him in person while there.

One of my departed friends was a well-known and respected High Priestess in my local-ish community, a published author and an old tech writing colleague. She'd been fighting cancer for some time and had stopped attending various events some years ago, so I hadn't seen her in a long time or stayed in touch. I had kept up with her lightly through others, so I knew a bit about how she was doing, but hadn't known the cancer was at this stage. She was very funny, smart, generous, and spent many years supporting and nurturing connections in the local Pagan/Wiccan community.

The other friend is the one I've posted about here recently. On the bright side, because I was home sick on Friday I was able to join the livestream of MM's funeral service, which was lovely. I wish I could join today's memorial, but I'm feeling sick enough to know I need more rest, plus I don't want to risk sharing this ick with others if I can avoid it.

So, Hail the new Ancestors, and everyone else please take care!

Dear Lazyweb,

Back in the heady days of macOS 14, you could customize the default reset-to environment of the "guest" user (Safari bookmarks, items on Dock, etc.) by copying stuff into "/System/Library/User Template/English.lproj/". And of course macOS 26 seems to have completely fucked this. How do you accomplish this now?

Previously, previously, previously, previously, previously, previously, previously.

Seriously, asleep more than I've been awake. And I never did manage to work out the logistics to get to the memorial, which halfway sucks but halfway is "Welp, social anxiety" so....

some Oscar thoughts

snickfic: Thor Loki headshots (Thor Loki)

Oscar-nominated movies I've watched: Frankenstein, Sinners, Weapons, The Ugly Stepsister(!!!!), The Secret Agent, Marty Supreme.

After the nominations came out, I was like "Wow, I've seen so many of these!" Friends, I literally had only seen the four(!!) horror movies, but between Frankenstein and Sinners they were nominated for so many things that it felt like I knew more movies than I really did.

Snubs: I didn't see it until after the nominees were announced (and neither did anyone else, apparently), but man, Testament of Ann Lee should have been up for Best Score and Best Actress at the very least. Best Picture too tbh.

Who I'm rooting for: I want Sinners to pick up a bunch of hardware, most of all Best Picture, but also Delroy Lindo for Best Supporting Actor, Wunmi Mosaku for Best Supporting Actress, Best Score, and Best Original Screenplay. My second choice in any category where they're going head to head would be Marty Supreme, and Chalamet is probably my pick for Best Actor.

My favorite story of these awards: The Ugly Stepsister, a Norwegian-language horror film, getting nominated for Best Hair and Makeup. There's no way it's going to win, but how did it even get nominated?! I hope the nomination got some more eyes on it, especially since it pairs so well with The Substance, which was nominated last year.

Rotten tomatoes: Frankenstein just wasn't all that. It was long, obvious, and self-important, and I hated the design of the Creature, which was basically just body paint and bad hair. I wouldn't mind it winning for something like Production Design or Costuming, and but that's about it. Props to Elordi for snagging an acting nom, though.

And take this one with a grain of salt, because I haven't watched it, but every Black person whose review I've come across haaaaaaated One Battle After Another. I think FD Signifier has put out three different videos or streams at this point about how much he hated the treatment of Black women in it. I was already primed to skip it because I disliked the trailer; in particular, the father/daughter bickering about pronouns for her nonbinary friend really hit me the wrong way. So I personally am rooting for any movie but that one in every category (esp against Sean Penn for Best Supporting Actor, because fuck that dude).

Many roadkill raccoons. Two roadkill turkeys. No deer, however. A whole flock of live turkeys, digging through the understory of a small woods. (I also saw a dead red squirrel in the middle of US 73 as I turned onto the road, but as I didn't have a plastic bag, I wasn't able to take him home to make paint brushes.)

Several redtail hawks. A kestrel. A Snowy Owl, flying across the road just beyond my mother's driveway (She says there's actually two of them). Several Canada geese, pairing off a bit early for the season (and if you're used to seeing Cackling Geese out in Oregon, the Mammoth variety is a revelation. Those guys are big. As was the bald eagle, swooping low over a creek beside the road.)

Eastern Blue Jay.  Such pretty birds.

An entire woodlot festooned with a cats-cradle of sky-blue piping--collecting sap for maple syrup.

The derelict hood and windshield of a snowmobile, perched on a snowbank on the shoulder of the road.

An Amish farmer and his two sons, driving a two-horse hitch down the highway pulling a rig designed to carry a big round hay bale. The new and the old in collaboration.

Denise and I have a Garmin satellite navigator that we bought for shows, and I'd brought it along, because no matter how new the rental car, they never have the software installed. And more than once, Google gave me directions after the exit.

Coming from the airport yesterday, both of them let me down. At first, I couldn't find the charging plug for the Garmin (turned out it was in the central column glove box, between the seats). Fired up Google Maps, and it couldn't find GPS. Finally went on dead reckoning north up the freeway until I could find an exit, parked in a Wendy's lot and found the plug. Garmin battery was super low, but kept alive long enough to get me to the hotel. But for some reason, the battery wasn't charging, so this morning, it didn't start at all.

So I programmed the phone, hit "Start" (I think I hit "Directions" yesterday) and Google took me on a wild ride through parts of Wisconsin I'd never seen before. I-94 to Mauston, sure, familiar, but then it to me off on state road 80 through Necedah toward Marshfield, and just when I though I knew where I was, it turned off on county highway X. (County roads in Wisconsin are lettered, not numbered,  which leads to some funny signs. Sadly, I reached the intersection of county H, O and G from the wrong direction; GOH isn't nearly as photo-worthy.) Finally, after some twists and turns and astonishingly bad black top, I debouched onto US 73, which was at least familiar. Gassed up in Neillsville, took US 10 to county G, at which point Google lost the signal, kept repeating Turn right on County Road G. But by then I was on home turf so finished the trip from memory.

Leaving from Willard heading back, it took me on a totally different route. Went the other direction on county G, picked H and B and BB to once again not quite go through Marshfield. Connected with US 10, which runs east across much of the state, then southeast down the Fox River valley, and somewhere beyond Steven's Point, my phone shut down. Battery was dead.

Reader, I had no idea where I was. Garmin was still dead. It was not long until dark, there was a snowstorm coming, and I was, basically, f---ked. The only good thing about the situation was that this particular part of highway 10 was a commercial strip, where I might, conceivably, find a charging cord.

I pulled off into a parking lot where stood, cheek by jowl, a Goodwill and a Harbour Freight. Mentally flipped a coin, went into Goodwill.

I used the bathroom first--I'd been on the backroads a while--then checked out the offerings. No computer section, unlike the Delta Highway Goodwill in Eugene. Lots of USB-chargeable gadgets in the appliances, but all hardwired, mostly old-style.

Went up to checkout, made sad eyes at the staffer. Do you have USB charging cables? My phone died in the middle of giving me directions to Milwaukee.

She asked me what kind--USB-C--then led me back to a display of cutesy chargers, plug decked out as a gift box, cable with a bow. Mini USB-C plugs on both ends. Bought it, took it to the car which, being new and fancy, did in fact have only mini ports. Started the car, plugged the phone in, and it immediately began to charge. So I went back in, thanked the clerk and told her it was working. Restarted the phone on 4% charge, and drove the rest of the back to the motel.
