Hah, my ramblings are very incoherent compared to what I was thinking on the bus at 7:30 this morning while reading about robots and trying to figure out how I was going to explain various film concepts to the kiddies.
Incidentally I think it's interesting that this is directly reflected in the way many viewers (whom I vehemently disagree with) also hate Skyler -- in that case b/c she's the "bitch wife/mother" who "punishes Walt for no reason," etc. I have never understood those ppl at all (do they not see Walt's behavior? how would THEY act in that situation?), although yesterday or something I read some interesting other thoughts about this. That some viewers indeed don't put themselves at all in her position, and instead it's b/c the show is from Walt's POV mainly and the action is centered around Walt, and thus Skyler is often (particularly in S1-midS3ish) an "obstacle" in the way of Walt continuing to do [whatever].
That's what I love. Because...well, not to get too personal in an unlocked post, but I sympathize and identify with Skyler a lot, and rather understand that covering for her asshole husband's misdeeds might be easier, emotionally speaking, than confronting the real ramifications of what he's done. But given the structure of the show, and the POV, Skyler's the antagonist.
(Well, and also run-of-the-mill fandom misogyny towards any female character on any show. But my foray into finding out how much of a BrBa fandom there was—not very much, apparently—mostly involved going to YouTube to see if anyone had made a fanvid to "Lawyers, Guns, and Money." No one has. This is clearly an oversight.)
Anyway, I didn't read Skyler's actions in S3/4 as out-of-character. Alas. I worked in a women's shelter. Intelligent, competent, apparently normal women will put up with a lot more than that.
Like, with what we see of Walt's personality from the pilot on, I just have a hard time believing that he was ever able to work quietly as a teacher for such a long time without acting out in some other way.
He probably power-tripped on his students. I completely buy him as a certain type of teacher that exists in the world.
The humor is so gr8 and it's hard to pick a few clips and have that come across! Especially with things that are also spoilers. lol I was rewatching with my mom recently and I always lol a ton when Walt is asking Jesse if he knows other distributors, and Jesse's all, "Yeah, I used to. UNTIL YOU KILLED HIM." ahahahahahahahaha.
I rewatched the first episode—which I recall not liking, and I also recalled your advice to start with "Four Days Out"—because I'm going to try to get my mom and one of my friends to watch it, the former over the objection that the premise sounds completely stupid. It actually is pretty good by pilot standards. And I am vastly amused that both leads are introduced not wearing pants.
