I still send letters sometimes! I mean, it's a pain, but I like to do it when I can.
And I just can't handle Skype. All of the awkwardness and self-consciousness of talking face-to-face without any of the actual benefits? HELL NO.
I'm not a huge fan of Skype, but I prefer it to the phone because there's a visual, and I have a hugely hard time with a disembodied voice that I typically can't hear well. I feel it's a technology that I'll like better when it's less buggy—I still get lagging video and shit audio. And it's like face-to-face in that it must be scheduled, so I only bother for people I really want to talk to. (And occasionally role-playing games, lol.)
one thing I really truly can't understand is how people will log into Facebook, or IM, or gchat or whatever, and just....never log off. They're constantly available. They're not really talking with each other, because they're all doing other things and there can be hour-long pauses between conversations, but the program is on all the time.
YES. I don't get it. I used to do it when I had a desk job, but then there were maybe three people that I would talk to, and one was in the same office as me. (zingerella and I used to use it to have conversations at work in an open-concept office to avoid interrupting everyone else. Our whole office used chat for that reason, though.)
Now I find that I get really frustrated on IM, because I've generally gone on to talk to one person, but a bunch of people see that I'm on and send me a message every hour. IM to me feels more like a planned conversation, and I can't handle several at once. I do like it for the real-time ability to send pictures and links and such.
My kids do the thing where they IM each other in class. I make fun of them all the time for that.
