You hear that phrase when someone's discussing charity, or how so-and-so is a good person, but—is this a thing that actually happens? Like are there people who go around to cancer wards and just sit with complete strangers and then feel virtuous about it?
Is that why people I don't know all that well are calling me up and leaving me voicemails about how they want to come and visit?
(Pro-tip: If you ever get a debilitating or life-threatening illness, many people will suddenly want to visit or help. Many of these people are not your close friends or family. Organizing them to come over and do stuff for you is nearly always more trouble than it would be to just do whatever it is by yourself. Just because you get sick doesn't mean you're absolved of all responsibilities beyond lying in bed and looking fragile. Life goes on and busy people are still busy.)
