I think it's similar, psychologically. The two "ISIS" killers (if indeed they were ISIS, and how are such things even defined? But wannabe-ISIS, anyway) both had drug issues and criminal records, and one had recently lost his job. Turning aggression and frustration outward is something that specifically men are socialized to do, but there's nothing to really stop women from doing it either. I think they tend to pull in mostly broken people—not necessarily people who have suffered great losses objectively, but who have subjectively not had reality live up to their expectations.
