I think people didn't know he was a badass because the mace looks very silly. However! He is clearly Not To Be Fucked With, and almost certainly saved lives, so that's good.
At first they were armed with short-barreled MP-5 submachine guns, but after more than a few had shot themselves through the foot or leg with them, they took them away....
