Oct. 16th, 2019 06:41 amJust finished: Guardian by priest, at least to be point where RainbowSe7en's translation has reached (85 out of a hundred or so chapters), plus the bonus chapters and post-drama ending. Once I got past the stilted language, I really enjoyed this. As I've been saying, I want them to film this version—fantasy/mythological setting, exceedingly mild romantic and sexual content, at least by Western standards—with the same actors.
My absolute favourite bit actually has nothing to do with the changes between book and adaptation but the bit wherein we find out what Da Qing the cat (who is mainly an actual cat in this version) goes on Weibo with an account called No. 1 Master Cat in the World to post selfies labelled "World's Handsomest Cat," despite a lack of opposable thumbs, which is absolutely what my cats would do if they were 10,000-year-old sentient cat fairies.
Anyway it's really fun. Despite the awkward translation and the fact that by definition, death is not a permanent thing, it still manages a few of the heartbreaking moments that drew me into the drama, with much more of the bonkers comedy. I want to know how it ends.
Tessera Volume 26: Feminist Utopias. This is a 90s-era feminist journal. I almost gave up reading when the introduction was in French and English—as in, switching languages mid-sentence—but the first story in it was about a revolutionary uprising in the West Edmonton Mall and it was a m a z i n g. The rest of it wasn't quite as good (and my French is nowhere near good enough to read about half of it, but it's an interesting historical artifact. The elegy to the lesbian feminist collectives of a previous era was particularly fascinating read, as this was well before my time but a lot of activists I knew back in the day were coming out of that scene, and it echoed a lot of my feelings about my time in anarchist movements.
Current reading: About to pick up a book of Umberto Eco's literary essays that's been lying on my coffee table for way too long.
