Oct. 28th, 2022 07:42 am"Cool People Who Did Cool Stuff" has been absolute FIRE lately and I honestly struggled to come up with which episodes I wanted to highlight with my not-quite-glorious return to #podcastfriday. But I decided on "Aqua Tofana: How To Kill Your Husband," because it is:
1) Goth as fuck
2) Metal as fuck
And it's almost Halloween. So we need things that are goth and metal.
Before divorce was legal in Italy and back when women were considered property, in every generation there arose a society of witches to concoct various undetectable poisons with which to murder one's abusive husband. This is a story about these women and how they helped murder a bunch of dudes who really deserved it. There's also a really long, fascinating digression into Countess Elizabeth Báthory, a.k.a. the Blood Countess, and both the (probably false) extremely metal story about her, and the (likely true) extremely goth story about what she actually did.
Margaret, as always, is exceedingly charming, and Shereen guests. They've got a fun rapport. It's obviously some pretty dark subject material, but the black humour works really well to leaven what's really a story about desperate women surviving any way they can.
