Photodump: The Aquarium

I went to the aquarium and took pictures and you have to suffer through seeing them all. Well, not really. I took over 400 and got it down to 17, which shows tremendous restraint and character growth on my part.

This are gorgeous. Out of curiosity, how did you get such great pictures at the aquarium? No matter what I do, mine always come out grainy, blurry, and all-around craptastic.

A few things:

1) I have a really great camera. Nikon D7000. It’s my baby.
2) I shoot RAW. This gives me maximum flexibility later.
3) Wide aperture and as fast a shutter speed as possible. I alternate between the kit lens and a portrait lens.
4) That said, you’ll note that there are not a lot of sharks and stingrays. This is not because the aquarium didn’t have them or I don’t like them, but they’re way too fast to photograph well under the lighting conditions. Lazy, slow animals are better, which suits me fine because octopus are my favourite.
5) I shoot a fuckzillion photos, most of which come out blurry and grainy. :)
6) Finally, I Photoshop the shit out of them. With RAW, you get ridiculous levels of control.

The light phases between colours so I have a few photos that are in the orange/brown/red phase, but for some reason it looked cooler with the purple ones.

I think you should have named this post "tentacle porn".

I normally don't like going to any kind of aquarium but these are so beautiful and they really capture what I do like about that kind of place, which is that it's like scuba diving for people who are cruelly deprived of scuba diving. Sea life is so weird-looking in a good way.

The jellyfish pictures are my favourites, especially the first and last ones, but the seahorse and the turtle are TOO CUTE.

It's not the evil kind of aquarium where they keep whales or anything; it's mainly things that don't notice if they're in captivity (other than the octopus, but they have a whole thing about how they provide her with stimulation so that she doesn't get bored).

I am terrified at the idea of scuba diving so I'll probably never go and this is the closest I'll get.
