The Tumblr dude said that he was going to make Tumblr inter-operable with ActivityPub. That would mean that Tumblrs and Mastodon instances could have some cross-communication.
Both Tumblr and Mastodon gained more community in Twitter's epic fail. By adopting cross-compatibility, they may keep those communities going for longer.
The way that you can do the user name tag here for twitter or tumblr. Would that even be possible for Mastodon? Those types of little features that help communities talk to each other can lift up all the communities.
I think both Tumblr and Mastodon can do RSS, so there are some arguments for whether this is really necessary or not.
