I'm told Canadian-made cop shows that were also aiming at the US market used to keep the badges, etc, pretty ambiguous; but if it's L&O Toronto the cat's already out of the bag.
Then again Bon Cop, Bad Cop (2006) had to use fake names for all the NHL teams (which really pulled me out of the story), so maybe there are legal issues about naming any real-life institutions or businesses?
