Hey, can you do me a favor? as a local that's familiar with the city, can you tell me of some of the great stuff I should check out in Toronto when I go on Monday?

Well, the main thing you should do is have a beer with me. ;) Besides that, it depends on how long you're here for. There's going to be a very cool-sounding outdoor lefty theatre thing from June 14-18 (the name escapes me). And late June is Pride Week; the march itself is overcrowded and over-commercial, but there tend to be good events happening.

Things that are always good to see: Kensington Market/Chinatown, the Art Gallery of Ontario (although it's under construction, so there may not be anything good on now), Queen W. (past where tour guides will tell you to go is a decent strip of small art galleries and a Tibetan area), and Corktown/Distillery (which sucks for anything cultural, but the architecture is gorgeous).

There are usually a bunch of free concerts down at Harbourfront, but I have no idea what's on.

Oh, and pick up a NOW Magazine when you get in (it's also online). It's their Most Unwieldy Issue Ever, a.k.a. the summer guide.

We're going to be there for a span of about three or four solid days not counting travel time, from the 5th to the 9th. What I'm specifically looking for are non-touristy things to do (I can figure out the major tourist spots from a travel guide): great but fairly inexpensive ethnic restaurants, funky cultural spots/events, good places to drink, that sort of thing. So yeah, that's a great start. Can you think of anything else off the top of your head?

Restaurants: My favourites include Little Tibet, Bo Du Duyen (vegetarian Chinese), Buddha's (cheaper vegetarian Chinese), King Palace (cab-driver Indian food that's cheap as hell and open at all hours), Queen of Sheba (Ethiopian), and Gandhi's (Indian roti that's the size of your head), although most of the time I just eat falafels.

I just learned that on Tuesday (International Day of Slayer!), there's an event called 6/6/6 Readings for the End of the World featuring, among other authors, OMGSQUEE Nalo Hopkinson talking about apocalypse theory. So I am almost certainly going to that. It's at the Cameron House, which is a bar I'd recommend anyway.

Good places to drink: I mostly drink at McVeigh's, which has Irish folk music on weekends. When I'm broke, I go to the Green Room, which is sort of a cheesy student faux-boho place. There used to be a bunch of good bars in Parkdale, but they're all getting closed down because yuppies are moving in.
