It's a matter of cumulative good and harm. Something like Walk for the Cure might not be the most efficient way of raising money, but it also does little harm. Money gets siphoned into advertising and overhead, but the advertising does create awareness as well as PR opportunities, and overhead creates jobs.

But the consumer angle is different, because the interests of these companies are actively in opposition to cancer prevention. Just as Philip Morris can't be trusted to honestly participate in the fight against lung cancer, we ought to be wary of self-proclaimed allies like Ford and BMW who would be adversely affected by an effective strategy to reduce cancer rates.
