To be a pedant, with regard to #2, are you sure more people voted than in presidential elections? Getting more votes does not necessarily amount to quite the same thing. Not that this significantly detracts from your larger point on problems with a societal-level sense of alienation.

Much as I dislike the former course of action, it seems to be to be the lesser evil.
I understand why it's a tactic, but there's a long-term problem with that. Ultimately, these sorts of wars are in American interests—at least in the interests of the American ruling class, which are the only interests that are regularly advanced and taken as universal—even if 3,000 or so working class kids get killed. The war is quite patriotic in that sense, insofar as patriotism is indistinguishable from national chauvinism.
