It's a little different in Ontario. Catholic schools were supposed to protect the largely francophone Catholic minority. The BNA assumed that "public" schools in Ontario equated to protestant schools. That of course is no longer the case. Public schools are essentially secular and the catholics, now the largest religious group in the province, enjoy a privileged status that wasn't envisaged by the BNA and is only defensible on the grounds of crude political expediency (aka cowardice) from which all three mainstream political parties suffer.
