Running out of clever titles

By the way, these entries are mostly public so that my mom knows I'm alive. I'm going to lock them down once I come back. But anyway, with this in mind, I'll start with a gross anecdote, which is that I saw my very first giant flying cockroach today. Right by my bed, too. My Chilean dorm mate made quick work of it, splattering cockroach guts everywhere.
Other than that, today was good. We struck out with the PRI again--they told us to come back tomorrow, so we'll see how that goes. The CMT was also a washout--they told us to go to the Labour Congress instead.

They have a big bust of Ricardo Flores Magon, the anarcho-syndicalist, in their lobby. He'd be rolling in his grave.

I did like this penguin/walrus thing.
The whole experience there was surreal. It was another one of those 70s Brutalist buildings, but not very well maintained. The secretary was an older woman chainsmoking in a dim office with inspirational sayings in English on the wall. We then talked to one of the guys there, but after giving us a detailed overview of Mexican labour history, he said that he couldn't say any of it on camera without official permission.

From there, we went to Tlatelolco, which has ancient Aztec ruins, a Spanish cathedral, and the site of the 1968 government massacre of students, all in the same place. So it's pretty creepy.

Photo memorial for the students.

This monument is overly kind to the Spanish.

The monument to the murdered students.
So I can say with confidence that the day improved after the cockroach incident. But then, when your day starts with a flying cockroach, there is nowhere to go but up.

I contest the truth of this statement. What if the day ended with a giant cockroach who was going to be your boss from now on?

Date: 2010-08-03 11:58 pm (UTC)In Mexico, I often found myself reminded of this quote:
--Lenin, State and Revolution
Some of the worst hagiographers were the '30s muralists. Except Orozco.
Your itinerary is largely paralleling mine.
