I tried to take notice of the Penny Arcade thing, but the controversy failed to arouse my passion sufficiently because I never actually found that comic entertaining in the first place. I think I'm just not That Kind of Geek.

This said, I hate neckbeards and rape apologists is cool and deserves a signal boost.

I still don't get Tumblr, though.

when I first saw the recent Penny Arcade newsposts about this thing, I was like "...well, from a couple of people who don't get it and don't look like they're ever going to start, this is probably the best we could hope for"

I am a huge geek. I love video games. I've never been into Penny Arcade *shrug*

I don't really get tumblr either. But I've learned that is is a good place to check out *ahem* ~tasteful noodz~. I am learning there are other things on there as well. Trufax: Politics are much less rage inducing when the articles have beautiful mostly naked women above and below them.

I think you have to use tumblr for a while as someone who posts to get it. Or maybe not.

I love it! But I tend to not write a lot anyway, so it's a great site for people like me. (as opposed to lj, where I feel I should write longer entries and therefore never update.)

Penny Arcade is a geek comic that made a rape joke about dudes getting raped by dickwolves. Some rape survivors objected, and the response was some condescending posts and dickwolf-related merchandise for sale.

As for Tumblr, I'm still trying to learn about it.

you can make a joke about anything, its all about the context. Its a joke.

It's like Chris Rock said, "you can make a joke about ANYTHING-you can joke about kicking your grandma down the STAIRS, just dont DO it."

Yeah. I mean, my sense of humour is pretty grim. I find Holocaust jokes funny. But a) you have to be funny to pull it off, and b) when someone calls you out on it, you've gotta be willing to act like a grown-up.

I liked a summary of the PA thing that I found - the original comic, and the rationale that they gave for it, border on being defensible. Videogame morality, as presented by videogames, is bizarre and vile sometimes, and that's worth examining and dissecting, and humor is what those dudes do for such deconstruction.

And then their actual reply struck out for Rape Apologist Territory and left civilization behind. It was pretty cringe-inducing to watch them basically walk right into being what they were accused of being - I would rather not believe that that's what they were all along, but actions, words, louder.
