I don't know how anybody can consider this good news. Congratulations, USA, you've upgraded Osama bin Laden from a mortal leader of a multi-national terrorist organization into a martyr whose name will continue to resound for another generation at least.

I got a weird, awful nostalgia in the pit of my stomach when I saw that was the first MNFTIU/GYWO. That, along with Susan Sontag's piece in the New Yorker and some stuff Molly Ivins wrote, felt like a lifeline, like a little reminder that not everybody had gone mad. Who knew how bad things would get?

That comic was one of the things that popped into my head when I heard the news.

I also thought about a GYWO strip where the office folks at lunch say that when we find and kill Osama, we'll have to find a way to resurrect him so we can execute him again, because one death won't be enough to satiate the bloodlust.

But I'm too lazy to look for it.

I hope that one of the effects of this will be that Americans will see even less reason to still be in Afghanistan, and that Obama will thus find it easier to proclaim victory and get out sooner rather than later. (Not that this will lead to a good outcome for Afghanistan, but I think that even longer western involvement will be even worse). The alternative effect could be to make Americans more gung-ho about military action. Too early to say, but I suspect the former.

It would be really nice to think that more people will say "So can we have our civil liberties back now please?" and that it will be harder to justify their continuing erosion, but on that count I am much less optimistic.
