I am also faintly embarrassed that I didn't smell a parody, given that I was at least alert and awake enough to notice that there were no Mordor scenes in The Hobbit. In my defense, I heard earlier today that they were putting Orlando Bloom in the movie, and there is no Orlando Bloom in The Hobbit either.
