Seriously, I already spend three hours a day on a crowded, slow bus or subway car. Those are the days I have to be at work, and I'm going against traffic. Anywhere else I need to be and it takes twice as long as it used to.

There's no point in even saying, "Fuck it, I'll get a car," because a) I get the shakes in the morning, rendering me a dangerous driver even if I tried, and b) gridlock in this city is just as ridiculous. Does the Honourable Wife-Beater just expect us all to stay home and not work anymore? If so, he had better be funding it.

That's not gravy you're cutting. That's the fucking lifeblood of the city.

The other option if you can't bike those distances could be an e-bike or electric assist bike depending on actual distance (greater than 25km for example might be a stretch for an ebike).

Besides, school mostly happens during weather not ideal for motorcycle, scooter, or bike riding. One of my co-workers got a motorcycle, but he still needs to take the bus more than half the time.

The electric assist bikes aren't bad (the pedal-lable ones that are more "bike-like"). They just help extend your range so you aren't pedalling the whole way.

Your co-worker takes the bus even with a motorcycle? He's probably just a wimp or needs to build riding confidence. IMO you bundle in the cold just like you would with winter cycling and you wear wet gear in rain. The only time I don't ride is when there is a huge crapload of snow and ice on the road.

Yeah, we already had our first round of major cuts last year, and I've been waiting for the other shoe to drop. As long as we remain dependent on fossil fuels, it's going to keep getting harder, not easier.

And I can't drive, or I'm sure I'd be looking into getting a car.

I propose that once the provincial election is over, and both the NDP & Liberal leadership conventions too, an advance search should begin for a progressive mayoral candidate to present the best possible challenge to Ford. Doesn't have to be a Miller clone, but someone who can bring out a broad enough left-centre voter consensus to overturn Ford Nation. This individual needs to then become highly visible leading up to the election, put forward bold policy alternatives, and not have any secrets that could blow up a campaign.

But just in case, this fighter-designate should also have a Plan B in mind, someone else to run instead if the campaign blows up.
