The last just war
Jan. 26th, 2012 01:19 pmI'm sure
ed_rex knows this already, but Spain has granted citizenship to Jules Paivio, the last surviving Canadian veteran of the Spanish Civil War.
I got to meet Jules a few years ago (he lives near where I grew up, though I didn't know that growing up). Here's a picture (in a locked post).
Lest we start believing that history is dead and buried, Baltasar Garzon, a judge who, courageously, is investigating the deaths and disappearances of 100,000 civilians at the hands of the fascists, is currently on trial in Spain for doing so.

Date: 2012-01-26 06:47 pm (UTC)I had no idea about the second part of this post, that's incredibly wtf. I don't understand how they can seriously take someone to court for that? Like, what charges are even being pressed against him? The article says something about exceeding the boundaries of his jurisdiction, but wtf?

Date: 2012-01-28 10:25 pm (UTC)Except the Garzon thing of course. Mind-boggling, but I see from the article that government prosecutors are actually against the case and say he should be acquitted, but the case is being brought by a couple of right-wing groups.
Somewhat bizarre that it's that easy to have a private prosecution like that in Spain, but on the other hand one can see potential in it - like, could actually get Henry Kissinger in the dock if they had that in the US. (Though if they had that in the US then everyone would probably be prosecuting everyone else that disagreed with them, and the right would win because they have more money. And I'm digressing).
