I haven't been able to do very much lately, to the point where even blogging is kind of exhausting. And pretty much all food looks unappetizing. This said, I managed to make this for lunch today:

Photobucket

It's onion ring eggs. Yes, I get my recipes from BoingBoing, why do you ask?

In other news, I'm kind of addicted to housewife blogs at the moment. This one's my favourite, mostly for the ridiculous link posts (though her DIY posts are also quite impressive). It's making me want to buy chalk paint, even though in real life I despise the fact the chalkboards exist.

I ate at this terrific Mexican place this morning and had chilaquiles with fried eggs and was reminded (because these were very excellent over easy eggs) that good fried eggs are not a simple thing.

Time to mention eggs poached in marinara. Ingredients: 1/2 jar spaghetti sauce (I like arrabiatta). 3 eggs. Bagel chips. Parmesan.

Put sauce in a small sauce pan and bring to bubbling. Turn the heat down to med-low and crack three eggs into the sauce (don't break the yolks). Kitchen timer to 6 minutes (longer if you like hard eggs, which why would you?), cover the saucepan, and leave alone. Pour over bagel chips, sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.

Same basic idea works with Indian curry sauces as well, though in that case you'd probably want to serve it over rice or naan.

Every time I see people painting cabinets or walls with chalkboard paint, I think back on school chalkboards and wonder how those cabinets will look after a couple years of regular use.

And then I wonder if whiteboard paint is a thing, because I would be all over that.

(...and then I search and discover that it is, indeed, a thing. )

There are also whiteboard wall decals -- http://www.wall-pops.com/dry-erase.aspx (note: arrogantly assuming such items can be bought from and sent to Canadaland) -- Maybe there's a style that could fit your Parisian cafe theme.

Or you can find simple rectangular/square decals at an office supply store and then mount an empty frame in front of it.

(Hmm, I should try this myself)

What about putting up a piece of glass with black backing and using grease pens?

4) Chalk dust is much more annoying than dry erase dust.
5) Chalk boards use chalk, which results in more screeching and broken pieces than dry erase boards.
6) The colours are less vibrant on chalkboards.

OTOH, dry erase markers cost a lot of money; chalk is cheap.

I did once attempt to do something similar with an avocado (that sounds dirty), unfortunately, it was an avocado I accidentally threw in the fridge... It wasn't bad, but it wasn't as good as I expected. I have another avocado, so I'll give it another try soon.

You end up eating wasting an unconscionable amount of the avocado in the process. If you were making a few, it might be enough for guacamole.

Omnivorous_lemur thought those were eggs inside slices of peameal bacon at first but onion rings sound even better.

Or maybe an onion ring on top of a slice of bacon!

Have you discovered Unfuck Your Habitat yet? It's not precisely a housewife blog, but covers much of the same territory from a different perspective - i.e. it's about how to get your living space under some semblance of control if you're not a June Cleaver wanna-be.

Not the best image for someone with morning sickness to be confronted with first thing (only joking - I'm managing to eat some toast now!) , but I congratulate you on the success of a mad recipe ! It must have required large onions, or small eggs.

Don't like onions, so I don't think I could pull this off, but I loves me some "Toad-in-the-holes" (Otherwise known as Egg-in-the-basket.

If you're getting into housewife blogs you should check out the Mormon Housewife blogs. They're a big thing. I kind of love them. Not only is it a voyeuristic pleasure* for me to look upon such a mainstream type of other but they totally have good DIY projects and excellent home economics tips and tricks, including good recipies that are big enough to freeze as leftovers for work / recuperation. I wish I could recommend a specific one to you but I just come upon them randomly when I'm in the mood.

* I am not too big to admit that the 21 year old wives in cute J Crew type clothes are strangely enticing to me. Especially the ones that are clearly competent moms of cute kids.
