Reading: Reading With a Vengeance is amusing me greatly. Sporking a badly written novel about BSDM that's thinly veiled Twilight fanfic? Sign me right up. I didn't realize just how wrong the book is. Holy balls, the BDSM community must be right pissed off about it.

Listening: The Bard of Montreal, a collection of Leonard Cohen covers by Canadian artists. (H/T: [livejournal.com profile] thegiantkiller.)

Watching: Fringe. Don't worry, almost done and then I'll get back to the B5 reviews. But it was just too annoying to see cryptic posts and not be able to click on them. Favourite lines:
"That's assuming that creating giant flying porcupine monsters isn't his end goal."

"I looooove LSD!"

*laughs* I love Walter. I haven't seen any of this season, yet, (or maybe last season too? god, I dunno, whenever Peter got in the machine and temporarily(?) disappeared) and I don't know if I'll ever catch up at this point, but gosh, I loved that show and how they wrote Walter.

The actor is amazing. I've seen him in other things (LotR) and didn't know it was the same actor because he, through actions/behaviour just completely transforms himself.

I've noticed with a few of the other shows that I've been watching the the season finale tends to be two or even three shows long.

Definitely. Overall I've been noticing how well that's been done on the show - I often feel like they really are twins with a lot in common but slightly different rather than one actor in two roles. Jasika Nicole has done a good job with it as well.

Eh, [livejournal.com profile] beaniekins did a way better, less pedantic, and more amusing review of 50 shades over here.

Wow, those books really do hit all the cliches, don't they? Not only is the heroine a virgin at 21 today, but she's never masturbated, never fantasized, seemingly never had a sexual thought in her life - and yet once the guy flicks her "on" switch, she's deep-throating like an expert.

People have talked about how this sort of thing really idealizes female virginity, but I think it's also somewhat contemptuous in its portrayal of virgins as wide-eyed innocents devoid of knowledge about anything sexual. Just because someone hasn't done anything with another person doesn't mean they've never thought about it! It would be one thing if the heroines were asexual, but they're not meant to be.

I can believe the first part, because I knew someone like that -- and not asexual or super repressed, just ... really uncurious.

Yeah. Deep throating takes lots of practice, and it actually kind of offends me that someone would, ahem, blow that off.

not only that, when she starts feeling attracted to this guy, she doesn't even know what it is! "oh my, what's this feeling! I cannot imagine!"

HELLO WHAT

anyone that dumb would not be able to dress themselves in the morning.

Well, apparently she also doesn't have an email address, so it seems to fit into a more general pattern of ... I don't know, ignorance? Willful cluelessness? To tell the truth, the lack of an email address baffles me more than the virginity and lack of any sexual curiosity ever. How can you live in the US (and not in a community which specifically shuns technology) and not have an email address these days?

If you're in college you're basically required to. they GIVE you one and you have to use it for a bunch of things. I teach legal writing and I communicate with my students through email.

The sex is amazing, he’s wealthy, he’s beautiful, but this is all meaningless without his love,

Fifty Shades of Grey, p. 432.

doesn’t sound that bad to me.

I'm behind on Fringe, but start from the beginning again cos it's good knitting material.
