When my 10s designed their CD covers, I asked them what they'd like to learn that they didn't already know. One said, "I'd like to make mine animated."
It's not new tech, but these cool stamps keep it going for a couple of seconds, rather than just the couple-three frames I've usually seen in lenticular stuff. As soon as I saw them, they looked to me like animated gifs (which probably means I spend too much time online lol). I grabbed a set because they just were too cool; the video gives you the idea but doesn't really do them justice. I keep wanting to check for circuitry!
But yeah, if you only want a couple of frames of animation, lenticular is the way to go. The Hellboy II Special Edition DVD uses a lenticular cover to swap between a Mignola pic of Hellboy, and a pic of Perlman as Hellboy. Pretty cool. So you could do some repetitive dancing or what on the cover.
Probably just fairly expensive, at least compared to just a printed cover.
