The lostdecadetheory is really conceptually up my alley (even if it means that I'm 43, heh) and now I want to write something set in the 19A0s, even if I don't much care for the art I've seen so far.
Have people done this already? Is it a Thing that no one told me about?
You know, my first impulse was to show my brother, who is a conspiracy nut and would probably love this; but then I remembered how he thinks *everything* he reads and hears is true, especially if it directly contradicts all actual, scientific evidence (for example, that guy in the States who shot up his military base a few years back was apparently on anti-depressants, which, according to him, work by removing inhibitions and pretty much work by causing schizoid breaks with reality; my stating that if that were true, this would be happening every bloody day was brushed aside, as was my attempts to explain, from my own first-hand perspective and own study of the subject, what depression actually is and how various anti-depressants actually work. Which of course has nothing to do with inhibitions at all, but hey, he heard it from this guy who has a late-night conspiracy-themed radio show on the Internet, so IT MUST ALL BE TRUUUUE).
Yeah, don't think I'm gonna show it to him after all, lol.
I've seen that theory on boingboing before, but... I guess I don't get it. What is the benefit of having a "lost decade" to explain something (aside from "cultural trauma"/forgetting)... All the retro/80s synth stuff is obviously explained by the fact that the 80s were full of that kinda thing. So, I guess I'm not sure... Like if they posited some crazy 5 year very different cultural thing then I'd get it, but as it is, it looks like the 80s to me.
Maybe that's the point? Maybe the 80s were a collective trauma, and this is a slight dig towards the Reagan Era?
Maybe Reagan had a pre-First Term in the lost decade (though doesn't he say it's really just 5 years in his chronology, despite the name?)
