I would be remiss in not mentioning that I went to the completely mindblowing Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds show, courtesy of the awesomecakes [livejournal.com profile] the_axel and [livejournal.com profile] the_siobhan, last Saturday. Because, amazingness. Probably in the top three concerts I've ever seen. (Albeit amazingness tempered with the unfortunate realization that I will probably never get to see Blixa Bargeld in the line-up*, but that in itself is tempered by the exciting notion that his absence in the band means more Einsturzende Neubauten. Hopefully?)

The coolest bit for me as a Nice White Lady was that Grade 5 and 6 students from a St. Jamestown public school sang back-up, adding a really gorgeous and haunting dimension to what's already gorgeous and haunting music. (Yes, they were off-stage during "Stagger Lee." As an educator, I can assure you that the kids have now Googled the lyrics to that by now and are singing it in class.)

Speaking of which (NSFW):

* Everything is better with Blixa Bargeld. The Bad Seeds, hardware store commercials, romantic evenings with your significant other. Seriously, though, his presence is utterly mandatory for "Weeping Song."

Aaah we saw him solo in Sheffield three years ago and he was all manner of wonderful. I'd expected to enjoy it but it was just magical, and he had really good clothes although obviously he's not very hot anymore without his ginormous hair. But it's like he knew that and was making an extra effort with his clothes, and I really appreciated that. Have you read his books? The first one is good.

I recently saw this clip of Blixa cooking a black Risotto made with squid ink.

I just don't even.

Blixa is a fine fellow and I would see him anywhere - have seen him in Berlin, Seattle and Vancouver.
I like to think that some of the little Neubauten Man pins I cast may grace the bottom of his sock drawer (gave some of them to one of his assitants at Burning Man long ago).

No, they didn't play Burning Man, though they have been out in the California desert. I got to know a group called F-Space out there, and one of the people working with them was also an assistant to Blixa (who at the time was splitting his time between Berlin and San Francisco). I gave her some of my little metal Halber-Menschen pins to give to him; I'd like to think he even looked at them before putting them out of mind.

The F-Space performance out in the desert was pretty nice! They toured with Blixa on the "How to Destroy The Universe" events a few years ago. You might like them. http://www.mobilization.com, http://www.mobilization.com/artists/F-Space/index.shtml

Well, he probably sees a lot of EN related homemade stuff.
I seem to recall that their official website at one time had a whole gallery of people's EN tattoos etc.
I don't make patches; I cast little metal things by hand.
Message me with your mailing address and I'll send you some pins.

Blixa apparently left the Bad Seeds to do more EN, and having just seen an EN show, I am not complaining.

But then being an Australian, I saw Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds play 3 times in the 90s, twice here and once in London.
