Help me bling up the Infernal Device's case

Among the exciting bits of having a Shiny! New! Phone! is that it's a phone that, unlike the old Infernal Device, people actually make cool crafty cases and such for. But being a pragmatist, I went for an Otterbox case because I am afraid of dropping the thing. It's a nice case (teal and grey, in case you were wondering) but it has two problems:

1) It's a little plain.
2) There's a hole in the back that shows the Apple logo. Which, aesthetically, is a bit dumb, but also basically says "steal me" to anyone who sees it out. Not that the case itself doesn't say "steal me," but it would be nice to have a bit of plausible deniability about it being a really great phone.

So, I thought, phone decals exist! At least, I have a decal for Mac the Knife (if you haven't seen it, it's Woody Guthrie's "This Machine Kills Fascists"), so I figured that such things existed on Etsy. Alas, they do not sell a "This Machine Kills Fascists" decal for the iPhone, probably on the basis that anyone who buys one is already not a very good leftist, so I spent some time searching up designs and found a whole bunch that I like.

Does anyone know if vinyl decals even stick to an Otterbox case? Furthermore, your advice is needed on the following options:

1. TARDIS #1. Plus: Cheap! Minus: No photo of the actual thing.

2. TARDIS #2. Plus: If the photo is to be believed, looks much better than the first. Minus: Will it stick to the case as opposed to the phone?

3. Girl on a tightrope with a crocodile. Plus: Cool picture, will match the case. Minus: Same as above.

4. Le Chat Noir. Plus: I still love this poster. Minus: Might not match the colour scheme, might make my phone look like a college dorm room.

5. Green lace. Plus: Will match, is definitely meant for a case as opposed to the phone. Minus: Has a hole for the Apple logo, kinda boring compared to the others so far.

6. House Greyjoy. Plus: Badass. Minus: I'd prefer it if it were just the sigil with no text, House Greyjoy kind of suck even though they have the best sigil.

7. Bathroom flamingos. Plus: The colour is perfect, awesomely retro. Minus: I may get sick of flamingos.

8. Alice in Wonderland. Plus: It's Alice in Wonderland. Minus: Same as everything else in this line.

9. 221B. Plus: Cool! Minus: Sherlock fans.

10. Anchor. Plus: Matches the colour scheme, meant for the case, implications of rum and sodomy. Minus: Shows the logo.

I'd choose Greyjoy. I mean, if you take the fandom meaning out of all these designs - this one is the coolest by itself. IMO.

I agree. I kind of hate most of the Greyjoys but I LOVE that decal. It looks piratey, there's a squid, it looks generally badass and black will never go out of style.

I really like 3. It seems like it will wear well and be entirely unique. Fandom stuff can wear out in unexpected ways sometimes, I find. Although a huge fan of Alice that particular image doesn't make much sense on a phone (unless it is an oblique comment on having drunk the kool-aid of apple, I suppose).

I didn't chose because I've a question - would it be possible to message one of the sellers of the designs for non-cases and just ask them if it'll adhere to the case?

It sounds like you want something that will stick to the case but not the phone (since you mention that as a plus for #5), but you also want something that will cover up the logo. I'm not sure how this would work because I don't have an iPhone but I assume that if the case's design has a hole for the logo (which is why you want a decal to begin with?) then something that sticks to the case will still leave the logo intact.

I'm going to tell you my thoughts on each one because frankly, I really like most of this since you have awesome taste.

#1 and #2: I like both of these, so I guess it's up to you which one you want to buy. I think that #1 is meant to stick to the phone or the cover as much as #2 so I don't think that makes any practical difference.

#3: If it matches the case then maybe you should get it. I think it looks cute, though I also find it rather... generic? I mean, it's a cool design, but it just screams etsy to me. :P

#4: I like this poster on principle though I also kind of don't for this exact reason: might make my phone look like a college dorm room. I had this poster up on my wall on my first year of university, when I was definitely not cool, and you don't want to have "awkward teenager" levels of uncool.

#5: I can't see anything green about this and I'm beginning to question whether I'm colour blind, but other than that, I really like it. It's decorative but subtle and it's a pretty classic design.

#6: This is my favourite even though I was trying to be unbiased, please get this one.

#7: This one is really funny and would probably cheer me up every single time. Maybe you should get this one instead for instant happiness. Nobody gets sick of flamingos. They're awkward and pink, everyone loves flamingos.

#8: I like it (obvs) but I think that this may be generally more popular and less unusual/unique?

#9: I didn't even click this one Sherlock fans have made me allergic to Sherlock for eternity do you really want to look like someone who squees over Benedict Cumberbatch's non-existent attractiveness

#10: I love this one because SAILORS!

Maybe you could get a combination. I assume you don't want to get something that shows through the hole on the case (i.e. something that, when the case is on, people could look at where the logo would be and see a coherent design and not a small patch of the whole thing), so maybe you could get the Greyjoy one and keep the case black or get the Anchor one for the case. Layering!

(I find Benedict Cumberbatch kind of hot? Or at least I did until his fans ruined it for me. But my association is only like 50% Sherlock/stupid Hobbit movies I haven't seen and 50% awkwardly blond and gay Peter Guillam, who I am congenitally incapable of not finding at least slightly attractive.)

If Pacific Mall is any indication, phone cases and skins are meant to be temporary fashion accessories. If you get bored with the nice flamingo sticker, replace it.

Also: you can go to a site like Gelaskins.com and pay $20 to get stickers of whatever graphic you want, for whatever your want (i.e. both case and phone). When I printed that Rana collapse sticker for my old phone, I just increased contrast a bit on an already well-balanced picture and I was quite satisfied with the results.

It does. What I did is that I held on to the gelaskins gift card I had received until I saw a picture that when I saw it, I immediately thought I WANT THAT and I got it then. But that took well over a year and now less than 6 months later, I switched phones, and I don't want to get the same picture on my new phone.

You may want to visit your tumblr history for inspiration... You could also use your tattoo design, speaking of which.

Hmm, but it wouldn't match, colour wise.

A lot on my Tumblr would, though it mainly has the same problem (reds and blacks vs. the teal thing I have going on. I'd have gone with red and black for the case, but for some reason that wasn't an option.)

Surely you can buy the House Greyjoy one and just razor off the part with text? Or will that leave it with corners that peel up easily somehow?

This may be a silly question because I have a very old-school flip phone that can send texts! AND take pics!! And that's about it, really, so I'm not really familiar with these new-fangled mini-computer things that you can dress up and everything (although it is really cool), but couldn't you, like, take a small round sticker of a design you like and, like, just stick it to the phone over the Apple logo? Or, heck, just take a small piece of electrical tape to it. With the case on, even with the hole there, all it'll look like is that you have a phone that is sort of an eggshell black under the case rather than glossy Apple black, which may help sell the whole "No this isn't actually an Apple la la la la I can't hear you GO AWAY" thing. Eh?
