I've heard it attributed to different people, but I'm not sure who said it originally.

The chorus of "Paul Robeson" by Black 47 has the variation: "The great are only great 'cause we're down on our knees / Rise up, my brothers and sisters, we were born to be free." (Which is too long anyway.)
