I would be remiss in my duties if I did not share with you all From This Swamp: Lovecraftian and Dystopian Music. You can download entire albums of spooky shit. A lot of it is punk and black metal, but there are some quirkier selections.

Particularly good:

Atomic Platters: Cold War Music From the Golden Age. Loltastic songs in a variety of genres, many of which are about Joe McCarthy or Joe Stalin.

Salah Ragab and Cairo Jazz Band. Egyptian jazz with an emphasis on drums. Very beautiful.

Tom Waits: Black Rider Demos. Very different from the version that you should already own.

Verdict on The Trotsky.

Ever feel like they made a movie just for you?

Um, yeah. It has the school thing and the commie thing and the Canadian thing and it's basically adorableness incarnate. And it's, dare I say it, incredibly heartwarming, I think because it takes its politics and both the adult and teenage characters seriously, even when they're over-the-top hilarious or gawking and earnest. Now that I'm a pillar of authority, I cringe at a lot of teenage comedies that make their kid characters know-it-alls and their adult characters buffonish; this movie managed to show adults learning a lesson from the kids in their lives while still making the kids awkward and flawed and showing experience and history to also be valuable.

And Ben Mulroney's cameo had me in stitches. I'd finished my drink by then or it would have been coming out my nose.

I want to show this to all my kids, yes.
