I don't really have anything insightful to say. I don't know if there is anything all that insightful for anyone to say—if someone thinks they're engaging in clever commentary about a massacre of protestors, they're probably wrong. You see a list of names like this, which includes 14-year-old children—shit, the picture of that little kid in his tux—and there's no real political analysis to be made beyond, "Fuck this." So I'm adding my voice to the collective global "fuck this," for what it's worth.
What do you even do from over here? Like a petition is going to change things when the Israeli government, led by an actual psychopath, has been given a carte blanche to fire into crowds of protestors by the country with the most nukes? It just feels like screaming into the void.

Date: 2018-05-15 10:18 pm (UTC)I wish I could explain to my fellow Americans that this embassy move, made by a president who uses anti-Semitic dogwhistles, was not for the benefit of Israel let alone American Jewish people, and how it was actually intended to lead to exactly this atrocity and the accelerated snowballing of the cycle of violence.
I wish I could help anyone by being sad.

Date: 2018-05-16 12:51 am (UTC)I actually think that most Zionists would agree that gassing 8-month-olds is not awesome for Israel's international reputation, and ought to condemn it along with everyone else. And I'm seeing some are. Sadly, that nuance will be lost on most Americans.

Date: 2018-05-16 06:46 pm (UTC)The fact that some people (other than outright Trumpians which, no surprise) can still defend Israel's actions is particularly rage-making. The Board of Deputies of British Jews put out a truly obscene statement saying that Israel was defending itself against an "invasion" and that the deaths were all Hamas's fault. The Washington Post editorial described the protests as a new "war" being waged by Hamas, though it did say that Israel should try to find a better strategy to defend itself against this wicked new Hamas strategy than killing lots of people. (Though they had some rather better stuff in the op-eds).
That said, I do think Israel is losing more and more people, including centrists, and perhaps especially Jews. I suspect a lot of people are going to have a harder time remembering exactly why we're supposed to regard Israel as the good guys. Younger Jews have been growing less pro-Israel for a long time, and I suspect that this is going to make an awful lot of them go "WTAF?"
When this might actually become a significant enough trend to affect western government policies is another matter.
